2012 335i Sport MPG Report -Stunning!

Just back from a trip to Lake Tahoe. Left Tahoe city at 10AM and made it to Walnut Creek, CA in 2hr55min. 187 miles, 65.5 average MPH, 39.3 MPG in Comfort Mode. The trip profile included a 1,400 ft. climb over Donner Summit and then a lot of downhill on the western side of the Sierras, then mostly flat the rest of the way home. Whatta car!

That's insane.

I couldn't imagine driving that slowly on an open road, but those results make me second guess that thought ..

Is that by the computer or calculated at the pump?

65.5 average suggests he was traveling much faster much of the time.

That's an elevation difference of 6,125 feet.

These results were calculated by the on board trip computer. Yep, 65 MPH average speed is just that. We were doing 80 and 90 MPH where we thought the CHP wasn't lurking. The downhill component was what pushed the consumption rate so high, IMO, but I still think this is remarkable. I love this car! Getting the M PPK next month. You can't have too much fun, you know.

Those numbers are very impressive.

My 328 is only getting about 18 in the city. I do, however, love the acceleration!!!

You must destroy the throttle and have absolutely no highway driving and lots of traffic ...

We started at about 6,000 ft. so to clear the summit, it was only about +1,400 ft. elevation change.

Re: 2012 335i Sport MPG Report -Stunning!

I'm assuming this gets better over time since you have a 2012....

I drove to Vegas in my 2013 328i when it had 5000 or so miles. Probably averaged 80mph ranging from 70-90 but probably averaged 32mpg. I'm hoping it gets better. My average overall over 6500 miles is only around 23.5 but this is in LA

True. 65.5 average over 190 miles is very fast! Slow traffic, stops, red lights, cops , etc... bring the average way down over time.

Our car had 8K miles on it during this trip. I don't know if age helps. When the car was brand new, we did the same trip and averaged 33 MPG in Comfort Mode for the round trip. We were doing 80 MPH + in some places. The difference is there is a LONG climb from Sacramento to Donner Summit with a +7,300 elevation change. Downhill is definately easier on gas.

Unhappy

You have a pic of the trip readout?

I have not been able to get mine above 27mpg and thats in eco pro going under 75mph...

Did you use 91 or 93 octane?

According to the eco pro setup 55mph is the most fuel efficient speed for our cars

it doesnt go to full eco pro "bar" until you set it to like 55. I have mine set on 75mph since going slower is dangerous

Hey, I'm not the OP but I have a few pictures of my recent trip of about 130 miles with high mileage readings.

I think I ended up with 40.3 mpg in the end. Sorry for the blurry picture.

Those numbers are hard to believe. What are you guys getting in day-to-day driving, commuting? I know guys with 2012 528s that are pretty disappointed, 19 mpg avg.

It all depends how and where you drive, obviously. Long road trip, half highway I got 34mpg. Weekly commuting through curvy back roads I get 18-19.

I didn't think to take a photo of the display. I can't think of my iPhone as a camera. I just copied the data on a note pad since I was impressed. Look, this was an isolated, unique circumstance of traffic, trip profile and driver exuberance. My usual around town is in Sport Mode an I get in the mid-to-high 20's when I do not respect speed limits and have the need to feel the acceleration. I have never used Eco Pro. I know when I'm being "bad" and I don't need the car to tell me what to do. I really, really love this car!

91 octane.

The computer isn't accurate. The only way to accurately determine your fuel economy is to fill the tank to the brim, reset your trip odometer, drive, and upon refilling, divide the mileage with the number of gallons pumped in.

You'll find that the computer consistently overestimates the fuel efficiency.

This would only be correct if the amount of fuel you put in is the same as the amount of fuel you consumed. It's unlikely it is.

I can tell you from first hand experience 120 MPH definitely does not conserve fuel! I probably spent more time at the gas station compared to the time saved by going so fast.

What you say is true.

But consider this; if you are consistently going to the same gas station, using the same pump, and always getting a lower fuel economy than the computer is stipulating, and this happens on all the cars you own every time, then, the computer is off.

The only alternative is the pump is off.

And this also requires your odometer to be consistently accurate.

But holding what I've held constant, in my case, the computer is consistently off.
