CIC to NBT upgrade possible?

I have a 2013 328xi that came with the CIC nav system. I understand that 2013 328 models made after a certain date received the NBT nav system, as well as all models for 2014 and beyond.

Does anyone know whether it is possible to obtain an upgrade of the nav system from CIC to NBT in my own car? I might be willing to pay for one if it possible, and the performance is that much better.

The performance (speed) is better, but the dealer will not do this upgrade and you would probably be looking at several thousand dollars. It is not enough of a difference for someone who has nav already to pay thousands to upgrade. It is nice that it does things faster, but not "THAT" nice. My wifes car has the NBT and I have a 335 with the CiC so I get to compare them at least 3 times per week as we ride with each other in each others car to different places.

It's ridiculously expensive because you are talking about the headunit of the iDrive. I don't have an exact figure because realoem.com doesn't have the part-numbers or info up yet, but if I had to speculate, it will be several thousand dollars including labor.

Also, I don't know if it was you or someone else that has started saying this - but I don't see ANY proof of late MY2013's getting NBT systems. My MY2013 completed production alongside some MY2014's, so if this is true, I can confirm when I take delivery this week. Until someone else with a MY2013 produced in June can confirm, I don't see why this rumor is being started.

My June 2013 manufactured 2013 335i (which I just took delivery of Friday) has CIC and not NBT.

The problem with such upgrade is that your car VO (Vehicle Order) list the CIC as your iDrive and not the NBT. So physically swapping one unit with the other would not be the problem but your VO will not support the NBT as your car was not factory-equipped with one. The VO determine what's your car is equipped with from factory.

In other words, peripherals in your car may not work with this NBT because of not compatible software or superceded hardware (for example, the NBT has a built-in Combox), your dealer will not be able to diagnose problems in your car because the diagnostic process will not pass beyond the NBT being out of place/missing the CIC, and forget about car firmware updates as long as the NBT is there.

For this to work it will be required to contact an aftermarket coder for the integration work and remove the NBT every time the dealer is visited for major work requiring software updates and/or diagnostics.

I believe this is true for US cars, but Internationally, cars that were manufactured after november of last year seem to have NBT. Plenty of people that post here from places other than the US have stated that they had the NBT in their 2013 3 series cars.

Very confusing. So will the 4 Series have NBT?

I think that it happened after March and not November, and only in China (with the touchpad).

That's what I thought.

Fingers crossed I get NBT out of luck since there were legit 2014's on the assembly line next to mine, even some on my boat perhaps ... but fat chance.

I would image that you are right about the touchpad portion. From what I could tell from reading / researching it previously, cars after november of 2012 outside of the US got the NBT head unit, but that did NOT include the touchpad version, just the head unit itself.

I think you are also right about china being first for the touchpad NBT combo, with the rest of the 2014s getting it (3/4 series). So, I think we are saying the same thing

+1

Touch was reserved for 2014's, but there might be some NBT's that snuck into 2013's that went into production alongside 2013's. This I believe, perhaps.

NBT is great but I wouldn't spend thousands of dollars to upgrade a CIC for it.

I took delivery and my 2013 F30 has CIC. It's really fine and gets the job done, especially as I am coming from a car without iDrive altogether.

Looking forward to the successor to NBT on my next BMW in 3 years
