Windshield cracked, need some insights..

So yesterday, with my bad luck, a rock flew into my windshield. For a while, i didnt see any chips and thought there was no damage. But within seconds, while i was still driving, i see a crack (around 2-3 inches) across my driver side top windshield. I have the following questions;

1. Does my manfacturer warranty cover this? My vehicle is still under the 40k/4 year warranty.

2. If it is not covered, what are the pros & cons in going to a 3rd party shop for windshield replacement?

Thanks!

I doubt its covered, and I had my 07 335 windscreen replace at and independent shop for 299.00(wilson tucker glass Charlotte NC) using Pilkington glass and mine also has the automatic wipers

and it looks like it did before the crack, no issues,

why would you pay BMW 1200.00 for a piece of glass that will get busted at some future point again????

I had tons of tiny dents in mine, and then one pretty decent penny sizes crack from a stupid truck that decided to merge right in front of me. I used Safelite and asked specifically for "OEM glass - Pilkington", they knew exactly what I wanted. Guy was an absolute damn professional (we even had a few sodas and swapped car stories). Was $100 out of pocket personally to him (you pay Safelite directly with cash) + a $10 tip. Took about an hour or so I want to say, perfect job, couldn't ask for better.

Does your auto insurance policy cover it (with a deductible of course). Reputable third party glass shop is the way to go. The dealer will probably outsource the work anyway.

Thanks for all the input fellas. I was thinking a third party resource too, but with the rain sensors, i just wasnt sure if a third party was appropriate.

BiHoTTo115, I'm assuminh the glass you've mentioned is what the OEM BMW uses? OEM glass - Pilkington? I have a 2011 e90.

Yes, OEM is either Pilkington (what my car had), or you can opt for Saint Gobain glass (which is what they use now). Pilkington IMO is fine. The guy I had from Safelite brought out the windshield, and also a "cover" that goes onto the rain sensor device, I guess it's used to position the sensor itself so that it sits right where it should. My old windshield didn't really have this plastic piece, but they wanted $50 for it. We slowly opened the package to see what it was, and lo and behold it was a "positioning" device + a new sensor, so to speak. I opted to not put it in, and he just slowly scraped off the old sensor and transferred it to my new windshield. Pretty painless overall.

Like you, I stressed about where to go for replacing my windshield for this particular car, but once I saw how immaculate the work was from Safelite, my worries subsided. Just ask for Safelite.

The Pilkington windshield sold by Safelite is OEM and the sensor is new and already installed on the windshield. They just plug it in. Mine was replaced for less than $400 about a year ago. No leaks. Definitely not covered by warranty. The windshield worked as designed. Struck by object and it didn't explode in your face.

Check insurance.

On a side note....I need my windshield replaced. Driving at dusk or dawn into the sun, with a windshield exposed to 6 years of pitting, is not fun...

Yes! Had this issue, just call insurance and request Safelite and OEM...easy peasy.
