My Bimmer is no more

On June 27, I signaled to make a LEGAL left turn. Traffic stopped to allow the turn and as I proceeded into the turn, a driver in a Sienna Van was passing on the right. I could not see the vehicle as my view was blocked by the car that stopped to allow the turn and she hit my right front fender about 30" from the front. It was quite a jolt but it appeared to be fender, hood, grill, and bumper damage. My 2008 238 xi certainly appeared to be repairable. I had it towed to a BMW certified repair shop and after they removed the damaged parts, they found that the frame rails were bent and the ins. co. decided to total the car. Was I shocked! After 7 years, I think that my BMW days are over. At my stage of life, I cannot justify a 47+k car. I am now the proud owner of a loaded 2013 Honda Accord. The car is sharp, rides nicely and gets 30-35 mpg on regular gas. I'll admit, the handling is not as crisp as my 6 cyl Bimmer but I had a 2013 328 xi for a weekend and it was not much different than my Honda. By the way, I have a space-saver spare kit for sale.

Glad you're alright, that's all that's important. Cars are expendable.

Not sure how I feel about the 328i being the same as the Accord, unless you had a nasty base 328i.

Anyway, best of luck man!

did you get the v6 accord? The new accords very looks nice especially the coupe. hp/torque wise and even handling, the v6 accord will blow the 328i away.

same as to your post. To me, it sounds like you think bmw's are the best cars EVER and nothing can compare to them which is obviously not true.

Sorry about the Bimmer ..... would like to hear more about your initial experience with the Accord .... just helped my son buy one as his first car .... he is loving the gas mileage compared to the old Disco he had been driving.

Great experience with my Honda (S2000) although I had to buy a battery after the 7 year old one started to indicate low cranking at a dealer test yesterday!

Never have I stated BMW's are the best cars ever, but I do regard them higher than most other cars because I enjoy the way they drive, I enjoy working on them, and I enjoy their looks/the overall aesthetic aspect.

I think you need to do a little bit more comparison reading on the "underpowered" 328i.

I also think you don't understand the special bond some of us have with this brand, and that's alright, nothing wrong with that. Some people like Audi, others like Lexus, it's a bond nonetheless.

It just seemed like mindless bashing yesterday in that other thread.

I drove my friends 2012 328i sports and drove my sisters 2013 accord v6 coupe. To me the accord handles slightly better and has more grunt(278 hp) vs. 328i(240 hp). Maybe if I took it to the track it would be a different story but for everyday driving I would pick the accord myself. Plus for a fully loaded 328i it would cost $52k compare to the Accord for around $35k. I just can't justify to spending that much for the 328i. I guess you are right about the "special" bond since i change my cars left and right.

I think we're getting somewhere at least. Here I thought YOU were trolling.

I'd probably grab the Accord as well (not the Coupe, disgusting, I'd rather have the Sedan if anything) if I optioned out a $50K+ 328i, can't argue there. But hell, even for $40K'ish I'd probably grab a 08'-09' M3, or a 911 Carrera. As long as we're talking about prices here, but value is opinion based, I think we can agree on that.

I'm a big fan of the 330i engine, so I found myself a solid one (only built in 06' unfortunately), plus I enjoy working on the car myself, so that's partially where that bond thing comes from. The car's just got a very sentimental value that I can't describe.

I guess lookwise we have difference taste because I really like the sporty look of the accord coupe. Speaking of the 08-09 m3, I found a great deal on a 08 m3 with 52k miles for $35k but I ended up picking up my 335i for slightly under $20k since I usually don't keep any of my car's for more than a year. I use to enjoy working on cars but not anymore, maybe for simple stuff like adding a lip spoiler or add on lip kits I do enjoy doing that myself.

Glad you're all right!

What's wrong with buying a used BMW and not spending $47K????

My wife's 2008 328ix has 27.5K miles on it when purchased and cost us under $30K.

We bought our daughter an Accord Coupe for graduation a few years ago, and she still has it -- I think the Accord's seats are more supportive than the 328i non-ZSP service loaners that I've driven.

My one beef with Honda is that the current model Accord has an extremely limited number of colors available with manual transmissions -- so if I needed to replace the BMW as my daily driver tomorrow, I might look at the Civic Si instead. (I'd also look at the 7th generation GTi if it were available.)

I've had the Accord for a week now and it is a very pleasant car to drive. I did a 200 mile day trip and averaged 36.6 mpg on regular gas! That is fabulous in these days of $4.00/gal gas. The 4 cylinder engine has plenty of pep, especially in the Sport mode. My one negative is that after driving 2 E90s for seven years, I notice a bit more body roll when taking curves; I would prefer the stiffer BMW in that area but otherwise, I'm very pleased.

Funny, the older I get the easier it is for me to justify spending more on cars (and other toys).

There's nothing wrong with American made cars IF they do what you want and drive the way you like.

Right now my family's fleet includes:

2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
2009 BMW 328ix
2008 Saab 9-3 Aero V6 AWD
2007 Nissan Murano S
1983 Datsun 280ZX Turbo

And I'd buy a late 80's Chevy stretch cab short box pickup in a heartbeat if I could get away with it.

STRONGLY disagree. I have no doubt the accord (great vehicle by the way) would be a very close competitor, and against someone who can really handle a stick shift the numbers below show how close it can be....but....its not all about the numbers. Its all about the engineering and how that power is put to the wheels.

I can't quite explain it, but my F30 turbo 4 performs unlike any other turbo 4 cylinder I have ever driven. I honestly forget its a 4 banger as it performs well at every throttle setting I command. I feel its just the way BMW builds & engineers their driving machines.

I will pay the extra 15K (or so?) for my loaded 328i XDrive Msport without the awful FWD torque steer that goes with all that HP & torque.

Speaking of superior engineering; I just recorded 36.5 MPG (see OBC pic below) on the NYS Thurway with cruise set at 73. When Toyota and Honda V6's (or 4 bangers) get that kind of economy with the same power, I will be very impressed.

2013 Honda Accord 6 speed V6:
C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 5.6 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 13.4 sec
Zero to 120 mph: 20.0 sec
Rolling start, 5–60 mph: 6.0 sec
Top gear, 30–50 mph: 8.4 sec
Top gear, 50–70 mph: 8.1 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 14.0 sec @ 103 mph
Top speed (governor limited): 132 mph
Braking, 70–0 mph: 186 ft
Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad: 0.85 g

FUEL ECONOMY:
EPA city/highway driving: 18/28 mpg
C/D observed: 18 mpg
