First road trip with my E90

I took a drive from Nashvile to my hometown in Virginia over the weekend. I've covered three states so far (VA, WV, and TN). So far, is been a pretty good trip. I've covered about 800 miles in the past three days, and I've got about 600 or so to cover driving back home tomorrow.

I'm averaging 26 MPG, which I'm happy with for a 6cyl with AWD. My only complaint is the road noise with the run flats. I've decided those have got to go.

This is the first car I've owne that made me want to drive anywhere. I went to WV to see where my grandparents lived, and drove around my home county to see a few sights.

Awesome. I love taking long trips in a BMW.

Over this last July 4th weekend, I drove from NY to Lansing, MI, which is about 700 miles each way and it was a great drive. My only complaint was the same as yours: the RFT's have to go.

Your road trip sounds great. My wife and I did our first road trip the day we bought the car:

We live in Chicago. Found a great deal at an east coast dealer (according to us, anyway.) Nothing came close at Perillo, about a 10 minute walk from our condo.

Flew from ORD to EWR on June 22nd, early. Cab'ed it to the dealer. Checked it out / test drove the vehicle -- it looked, drove, and sounded great. Bought it with about 12,000 on the ODO, CPO, originally registered in April of 2012.

Drove to Cleveland to see our buddies from way back.

Got up on June 23rd, and drove back to Chicago the same day. Went back to work on Monday morning.

Your trip sounds much more enjoyable, although we had no problems and were comfortable the entire way.

This is a great car for road trips ...

Don

A couple more pics -

I had to get a shot of myself with that waterfall. When I was a kid, I would climb down a steep embankment so I could swim in the pools of water below the falls. Now they've fenced it off and made it pretty difficult to get down there.

I also visited an old iron furnace and the creek they used to power some of the equipment. It's a gorgeous park now with nice hiking trails. This creek has several areas of falls.

Another thing I love about this car is how much it loves to take turns at higher than recommended speeds. While I never broke the speed limit, the car was more than willing to take a turn at 10-15 mph above the recommended safe speed. No loss of control, no power slides. It was nothing short of addictive. Both routes I took were pretty challenging, with lots of hairpin and switchback turns. My 328 took them all in perfect control.

Congrats on doing what these cars were born for.... running on the open road and making corners look easy. Looks like you are having a great time!

What kind of run-flats do you have. My car came with the Bridgestones. They were loud. I changed them out at about 50k miles (they were due) and replaced them with Continental run flats. Much nicer ride and much quieter. I have 43k miles on the continentals and they are still quiet.

Mine has Bridgestone Potenzas as well. I was going to wait until they were due to be replaced. After my trip, I don't think I can wait that long. I'm actually thinking of getting away from run flats altogether.

I just finished a four hour drive a few minutes ago and I'm already planning the demise of my Contis. Maybe it was the combination of my upgrade to 17" rims and new tires but the ride is so harsh, loud, and the car now handles real nervous...I can't imagine the Bridgestones.

Ditch the run flats. I did on my other one and am loving every minute of it.

The Bridgestones are very responsive, but the road noise is unbearable.

I'm going with conventional tires, though I'm not completely sure which ones. Right now, I'm contemplating-

- Goodyear Eagle Sport A/S
- Toyo Extensa A/S or HP
- Nitto
- Falken ZVex
- Hankook Ventus

The Michelins may be a bit pricey, but they are extremely quiet and have great handling. Might be worth considering.

Awesome man! Nice pics! I'm also a bit fed up with my RFT. Thinking of getting new wheels and just putting all seasons on them. I dont have a spare so I'll also have to get one of those.

Finally back home in Nashville. I've covered 1700 miles, and I averaged 27 MPG on the return trip. Lots more coasting and more time up at highway speeds.

I did have a good laugh when I was passed by a Prius on I40 outside of Knoxville. I was cruising along at 78 mph. He had to have been going 85. My good laugh was over the fact that at that moment, I was getting around 35 mpg. He was probably getting 17.

If you want to go that fast, you probably shouldn't drive a Prius. All that efficiency that he could use is flying right out the exhaust.

Tony,
Nashvillian here too. Congrats on the great trip... Those are some of the best driving roads around in E. TN and WV.

You might want to check out the Conti DWS also. Put some on my wife's old X5 and they were awesome, much quieter than the Michelin's they replaced and they are non-RFT.

Glad you enjoyed the drive . These cars are meant for long road trips. The miles just seem to melt away without any effort. This is when you really get to appreciate how well designed the seats are at keeping you fatigue free over long distances.

I will be going on a road trip this weekend from Toronto to Quebec city which is roughly 600 miles, I am seriously looking forward to it.

Another vote for the Conti DWS. It was the first thing I did when I picked up my 328. Smooth, quiet and still responsive.
