BMW Clinches Four of Cycle World’s Ten Best Motorcycles of 2013

BMW sweeps Superbike, Touring, Sport Touring and Adventure Bike Categories

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 29, 2013... BMW motorcycles have earned four of the coveted top ten spots in Cycle World magazine’s “Ten Best Bikes of 2013”. The magazine’s September issue, featuring its 38th annual “Ten Best” list, names BMW’s HP 4 the “Best Superbike,” BMW’s R 1200 GS the “Best Adventure Bike,” and (for the third year in a row) the BMW K 1600 GT and BMW K 1600 GTL “Best Sport Touring” and “Best Touring” bikes.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive a “Best Of” award from Cycle World in any category; to earn four in one year is just phenomenal,” observed Hans Blesse, Vice President, BMW Motorrad USA. “Strong sales, and positive response from customers and journalists reaffirms BMW Motorrad’s commitment to continually raise the bar for performance, safety, technology and value in this competitive market.”

“It’s both a tire-torching track bike that will help you set the lap time of your life and one of the most street-useful racetrack refugees ever offered to us mortals,” wrote editors of Cycle World about the BMW HP 4, the lightest four cylinder in the segment and the most advanced production sporting motorcycle ever built since its predecessor, the BMW S 1000 RR.

The 2013 HP4 provides uncompromising power with an output of 193 bhp and a maximum torque of 83 lb/ft. It features the world's first dynamic suspension system DDC (Dynamic Damping Control), which automatically adapts the suspension damping to the situation at hand (Rain and Sport for public roads, Race and Slick for the race track).

Of the R 1200 GS, winner of Cycle World’s “Best Adventure Bike” category, editors wrote, “The all-new version of the motorcycle that defined the ADV genre reclaims its Ten Best crown with an all-new chassis, a liquid-cooled Boxer Twin with “vertical-flow” heads and ride-by-wire electronics featuring five modes that influence throttle response, power delivery, ABS, stability control and BMW’s semi-active suspension. While traditionalists may scoff at the added technical complication, much of it is “set and forget” tuning that makes this explorer more capable than ever.”

BMW’s best-selling model – the R 1200 GS – has become the icon of all travel enduros. The latest generation GS is the culmination of 32 years of development that began with the legendary BMW GS motorcycles powered by opposed-twin “boxer” engines.

“Three-peat” Cycle World “Best Of” champs – the BMW K 1600 GTL and K 1600 GT – also continued to earn editors’ praise. “Though the GTL has been the touring bike champ now for three years in a row, we have not yet run out of accolades to heap upon the Bavarian six-banger. Really doesn’t matter, since the ESA version will allow you to easily adjust to whatever you heap on.”

“Staking a claim as the ultimate sport-touring bike since its 2011 debut, BMW’s K 1600 GT has yet to see a serious challenge,” Cycle World editors wrote. “The 1649cc inline-six combines ultra-smooth, massively strong output with a solid-handling chassis exhibiting agility that defies the GT’s 755-pound fully fueled weight—plus a suite of luxury features it shares in common with its GTL sibling.”

Both the BMW K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL have set new benchmarks for grand touring motorcycles by offering the world’s most advanced technology available on two wheels. These innovations include:
  • The world’s lightest and most compact six-cylinder engine on a production motorcycle.
  • The world’s first Xenon adaptive headlight on a motorcycle.
  • The world’s most advanced audio and communications system on a motorcycle.
  • A multi-controller on the left-hand grip, which allows riders to operate the motorcycle’s systems and adjust its settings without taking their hands off the bars.

I can accept the K1600GTL as best "Touring" bike, but have a hard time buying the 755-pound GT as the best "Sport Touring" bike. That just seems too heavy for "sport". My K1300S (which at 200 pounds LESS is still a little on the porky side) is more a "sport" touring bike, even if the handlebars could be a LITTLE higher.

"Beemer" is for my BMW motorcycles - '13 K1300S, '95 R1100RS, '88 K75S, '75 R90S (gone, but not forgotten).
