new to forum / question regarding tires

Hello,

I am new to the forum and had a question regarding tires. I have Dunlop run flat tires. The rear tires need to be replaced. I recently purchased my 2010 535i sport package as certified pre-owned from a BMW dealer and have put approx 9k miles on the tires (first BMW). I just noticed the rear tires are balding and the steel belts are showing. When I purchased the car the tread looked to fine. All 4 tires on the car show to be 275/40/18y and when I started checking for tires, the major tire retailers show that 35s should be on the rear. Could this have caused the "excessive" wear?

If I choose to switch all 4 tires to NON run flats would the dealer have to program something in the car or could I just change out the tires without any programming problems?

Thanks,

Jon

Welcome Jon.

1) I doubt it. How much tread was on the rears (in mm) at time of purchase? Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST (Right?) have a UTQG of 280, which is not partucularly soft.

2) No. Just get new tires, get 'em balanced and mounted.

With any car, it is designed for a certain OD of the tire/wheel package. As long as you stick with one of the approved tirewheel sizes, the OD remains the same, regardless of the aspect ratio and the wheel should fit.

Welcome... as you explore the GT here on Bimmerfest, you will find several incidents of tire wear (especially on the rear). I think the 2010 in particular.

The 2012s are very guilty too

If you go with the non-runflats there are lots of threads on choices. I put Michlein Pilot SS on my 535i GT. Massive difference and so far great wear.

Love the Pilot SS on my M3. Excellent tire.
