335d audio questions

I'm seriously looking at buying a 335d in the next few months--2011 most likely, but 09-10 are possible as well. I'm having a little trouble making sense of the audio options, like the (list price) $400 "iPod integration". I'm undecided on iDrive and the Nav system.

I'd like to connect my iPhone via Bluetooth to place and receive calls, and I'd like to be able to control and play my iPod and/or iPhone through the stereo. The car I test drove over the weekend had a USB port in the center console; I was assuming I could just plug the iPod or phone into that. Is that right, or is there extra hardware (or specific options) required?

What about the Bluetooth? Is that going to be standard, model year dependent, or does it require a particular option or package?

Appreciate any guidance on this, and if it's already been discussed elsewhere a pointer would be great. I loved the car, looking forward to having one of my own.

Re: 335d audio questions

I have a 2011 335d with all the options that you mention, i have it listed for sale ( need bigger car) if you are interested look for my post with all the details and pics. I can tell you once you get used to the nav, keyless entry, iphone integration and my 1000 songs in a usb stick that plugs in the glove compartment...... its very hard looking for another car (bigger) with all those options and the 30+ mpg and power.

Thanks,

P

I know that it's been discussed, may be up in the "where's this..." sticky.

1) BT was not standard on any E90. It was included in the Premium package, or separately as a bundle with BMW Assist. Look for the SOS button in the headliner. It essentially can't be added for any reasonable amount of money.

2) 2010 (and very early 2011) 3-series came with the actual Base stereo (rather than "Professional") - and it's not good at all. Look for no tweeters on the front door a-pillars opposite the mirrors.

3) All E90 came with Aux port in center console. You can play, but not control, from there. The USB port is only available with iDrive/Nav models (I believe.) It allows you to store songs on the internal harddrive, and to play them (and I think control the device.)

Search for ctuna - he's posted links to stereo stuff all over: ctuna, e90post, stereo would be good search terms.

Thanks for saying "use the search function" nicely. Should have tried that, of course--don't know what I was thinking.

I'll have to check on this a bit further--the car I drove Saturday didn't have iDrive, and I'm 99% sure I saw a USB port in the center console. I didn't have a cable with me to check it out, though.

There is a Y shaped cable that you connect Ipod up with. One part of Y goes into USB and the other goes to the aux port. Opposite end is standard Ipod/Iphone connector. My older Ipod (bought it around 2007) would not work when i first took delivery. New car sales manager came and plugged in his later i pod and it worked fine.

My 2010 335d has premium but no idrive/nav, and has no USB (only aux). Perhaps it's part of the HK/Logic 7 premium stereo...

Bluetooth is amazing in this car. And the music sounds great, streaming wirelessly. Good luck.
