E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

e30 electric windows

I am sure with the ignition off if I opened my drivers door my windows could be operated. Is this how it is meant to be?

But now with the door open and ignition off they do nothing. I thought the door switch (whatever it is called) would be the problem but the interior lights when set to auto turn on and off fine with the door open and closed.

Dodgey relay? behind the glove box?

With the ignition off the windows should NOT have operated. I don't know what's up with that, but if they work now with the key on and don't with it off, that's how it's supposed to be. The interior light setting has no effect on the window operation.

EDIT: Wait...do you have a cabriolet?

iIs not a cabriolet. I thought it was a feature.. If I turned the ignition off without winding the windows up I would open the door enough for the interior light to turn on and then the windows would operate.

Weird. It's not supposed to do that. Maybe a previous owner rewired it to do that? Once the key is off, you're not supposed to have any power to the window switches at all. Interior light, yes. That has power all the time, and is operated by grounding the light circuit through the door plunger switch, but it shouldn't have a thing to do with the window motor operation.
