You know I seen many cars that after looking at alumminum based build parts it's either probably a car thing or people should really consider installing cast iron on some key componets instead of a plastic water pump impeller.

...which would be why BMW switched from plastic impellers, to metal, to composite.

Lucky you I don't have that kind of money to invest on a car an overhaul every 160 or so miles should be good enough for me.

Additional beneficial knowledge

Thanks for the additional information. I flushed and replaced the coolant at 40,000 and 70,000 miles as well as replacing the thermostat on my 1998 323ic thinking I was being proactive; now has 71,000 miles non it. I baby the heck out of it, it's never seen snow and rain very seldom. My wife has to move her traverse out of the garage when the beamer isn't in storage because I garage it 365 days a year.

My last fan clutch I couldn't get off. I didn't realize I was turning it the wrong way at first, and was tightening the **** out of it

Ended up cracking the water pump puley trying to get it off. But I was replacing the clutch, pulley, and pump anyway so I just unbolted the pump and threw the whole assembly away.

If those items were just replaced and there are no visible leaks, the coolant could be getting lower as the air works its way to the top. Try topping off the coolant for a few days and see if it stabilizes.

Yeah, just keep adding coolant and it will probably level off eventually. Seems to take a few days for me every time I open the system up.

If the fluid level really is fine, then it's just a bad sensor. Easy and cheap fix. Or bridging the two wires in the connector will keep the message from popping up.

You probably need a new coolant level sensor.

Funny, I replaced mine in September, and ever sine I put in my new water pump and had to replace some lost coolant, I've been having the same problem I had before which is getting a check coolant level message ONLY when I turn off my car and ONLY sometimes. I'm going to pull the connector to the sensor and make sure the contacts are good tomorrow.
