Do you (or would you) ever let Valet park your car?

My wife went downtown last night with her girlfriends for a birthday dinner. Told her to park in my office parking garage. About had a heart attack this morning when she told me she just had valet park the car for her...

...about to go inspect the vehicle.

Why the fuss? It's just a car. Letting the valet park your wife . . . . that's a different matter.

1979 Junior prom and the valet @ The Sheraton Downtown Seattle backed my absolute diamond '67 Cougar XR7 4 speed into a pole. Bumper and trunk looked like a 'V', tried to shrug it off and enjoy the rest of the evening, but there was definitely a palpable vibe that soured an otherwise great event...I avoid whenever possible

If the Ferrari has the electrohydraulic transmission any valet can drive it.

The last time I let a valet drive one of my cars (hotel garage in DC -- I had no choice, they wouldn't let me park it myself and I wasn't going to drive back to New Jersey) when they gave the car back to me, I could smell the burning clutch.

Maybe 10% of the population can drive manuals, that seems to hold for parking valets, too.

I would NEVER let this happen....I work in a hotel in Vegas, and we have storage in the garage where valet parks. I, first hand, watch these guys start a car and bolt!, before the oil is in the motor yet! BUT...I have had a change of heart lately due to my wife complaining about having to walk a mile after I park in Egypt! So I now valet.....and it IS just a car. Now if I were driving a stick, that may change my mind! It IS kinda cool when valet pulls up in your nice BMW, or whatever nice ride you may drive, and all the peeps see your quality ride!!

My wife's unwanted scratches would heal. The car's would not.

Never. I don't let the valet handle any of my cars since one scratched up my car at the Sheraton in Kona. I am too picky and too careful with all of them, not just the BMW.

I had a valet park my E93 while on ED in France only because the grade down the garage entry was precarious. I walked along side while he was driving. On a regular situation never. I don;t even know how to do it with CA in my X3.

Yes, but under circumstances you guys would be fie with too. Local upscale club in Clear Lake called Cullens whch has a circle drive right by the door. I ask for the car to be parked right there at the top of the circle. So, the valet only drives it about 25 feet from where we get out. I am able to walk out to the large glass door and check on her during the evening. Never moves an inch. When we are done for the evening, I walk up to the valet stand, tip the guy, get the key fob, and WE unlock it and drive away.

Many years ago I was taking my mother out for dinner [mother's day or something] to Gladstone's For Fish where Sunset Blvd. and Pacific Coast Highway meet]. We pulled into the parking lot and a valet runs up. I asked to park my camper van in a handicap parking spot. He said they don't have any and that they would park it for me. I said it was OK with me but my little friends might object. We had 3 large dogs with us. At that point my older male shoved his head between my left shoulder and the side or the van. He glared at the valet. At the same time the younger male came across my knees and also glared at him. Third dog also came up. Valet backs off and says "uh, just park it over there under that tree. Lock it and take the keys with you". As I drove off I told him "oh, by the way the guy in the van behind me has dogs too. We both got great shady spots. hehe. [Oh, for someone who might object to leaving dogs in the van, it was a bubble top with windows and vent in the roof. It was as cool in the van as it was under the shade of the tree. Also there was lots of water for the dogs. ]

It's a car, not the Crown Jewels. Yes.

Although I admit I'd look it over afterward, before leaving.

Depends on the establishment and the valet. Professionals at four- and five-star hotels and restaurants, yes without hesitation. Twenty-somethings jockeying cars for extra cash when self-parking is an option, not a chance. On the third hand, you often don't have a choice--self-serve is not an option in most Manhattan parking garages, for example.

Uhhh it's car. Of course I let people valet park it. What do you do when you pull up to a nice restaurant? Say "oh it's valet parking - I'm not eating here" ? Get real

I'll generally avoid it. But if necessary, one trick is to tip them beforehand.
Also, we have a valet parking lot at work. When it gets full around midday the valet is more of a jockey. What's cool is he can't drive a manual, so he let's me pull into the next available slot and I don't have to leave my keys. Of course I tip him as well -- and most people don't, so I know he'll keep an eye on it.

Two things you never do by man rules. One, don't let anyone drive your car, second the same applies to your wife!
