3rd trip for same SES problem? They say no. What do you say?

So I originally had an SES light go off awhile back, I got rough idles on start-up and at idle after driving it (Stop lights). I decided to bring it to Autozone to have them scan it. It came back "Bank 1, Bank 2 too lean". So I thought "oh, oxygen sensor, that's not too bad". I took it in to the dealership (which is an hour and a half away) and they kept it for 2 or 3 days and said that it was a valve cover gasket failing. Since I am out of warranty, I paid $1450 to get that done (valve cover all one piece, can't just replace gasket he told me). I then had the same SES light come on a few days later. I got it read at Autozone again and it said the same thing "Bank 1, Bank 2 too lean". I took it in and they said they would fix it. A few days later they contact me and say they have no idea what it is. They said they did a smoke test on the exhaust and found no leaks. They opened a PUMA case and the BMW engineers got back saying it was the fuel pump. They replaced the HPFP. And when I said I am due my money back for the valve cover they said it was a different code being thrown when I brought it back and that it was just a coincidence that it happened so close together. I said I wanted proof and they said that was fine. I got there to pick up my car and he gives me a printout (which to me looks like gibberish) but tells me you wont see codes since their software does troubleshooting and doesn't show actual codes. But he said he'd give me what they have. He handed me what looks like a diagnostic printout (I guess). But he couldn't give me the last visits codes (or rather diagnostic readout) that were thrown at that time (something about a computer problem), so he said he would e-mail them to me Monday (tomorrow), So we'll see...

Today I start the car (2 days after pick-up and first cold start since they installed the HPFP) and I get a very rough idle with it revving up and down for 10-15 seconds and a "Engine Malfunction, Reduced power" light. I drive it for a min. down the road and it reminded me of when the first HPFP went out (1,200 miles too). I could not get any acceleration and am now going to have to tow it to the dealership (again, an hour and a half away).

To top all this off I have scratches from the last visit on my Cabin air filter cover (totally carved up), and both front fenders (clear coat scratches that look like someone's belt while leaning over engine bay).

Sorry for the long read but I now need to know what to do. I do not want to ride with a tow truck an hour and a half because they screwed up. Can I demand a loaner be driven to me? (they usually give me a loaner when I get an appt.) and Can I demand my money back for the valve cover? Also, do some dealerships really not have codes on record somewhere they can print out? i.e. not diagnostic gibberish but the actual codes that are being thrown? Also, what do you guys think the problem might be?

Car has had a turbo replacement (under extended warranty) at the same dealership not too long ago (maybe a month ago?) and the car has 58k miles on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Wow!! That is horrible, Mk. I don't buy the "coincidence" concept that they are giving you. I think the $1450 bought you nothing. I also don't know why the latest HPFP only lasted two days. Something is drastically wrong in my opinion. I would not want to drive that car for an hour and a half in limp mode. That would make it more like 2 hours. Hopefully some "engine" understanding people can chime in. I'm really sorry that this is happening to you.

Problem is: Your dealer.

Find an Indy - in Central Florida, surely there's at least one!

About that gasket.....

HERE's what dealers use -- HERE's what you should use. Dealer can't print out codes? Dude! You've been shagged....

Deep six those morons. For review, I'd like to share a photo of my dealer's Service Advisors discussing a similar issue:

For all the long suffering souls reading this thread, be aware:

Every service department manager is trained to read Yelp! reviews of their organization. Customers and prospective customers frequently read 'em too....though over-the-top glowing reviews are clearly posts by the organization's employees, a litany of poor reviews tells a story.

To wit:
  • Go can get past the BS at Yelp!
  • You can communicate with the dealer at Yelp!
  • You can be incognito at Yelp!
Negative info will immediatley generate a sympathetic offer of help from the service manager. Pay no attention - that's damage control - they are already revealed for what they are.

I too live in Central FL and am wondering what dealership you took the car to. I have bought 4 BMWs from Fields Winter Park and one from Fields South Orlando. All serviced throughout warranty at Fields Winter Park. They have been nothing short of stellar for all my warranty repairs. For out of warranty I use Stashus in Longwood FL. Very good indy. He's not cheap, just a little less than the dealer, but honest.

I am curious what dealership you are dealing with?

The problem is not that they wont print anything out for me. The problem is I am unsure what to make of a bunch of diagnostic gibberish. I asked for CODES, as in fault codes they were getting and they said "We don't have codes, it does troubleshooting and tells us what to replace or fix". I am wondering if this is at all true. Also, trying to get the gibberish diagnostic from my initial visit is proving difficult as well...

I have tried a few of those too before going back to the dealerships. Euro Specialists scratched up my wheels on a simple tire mount and balance. And then when I called to talk to the owner (who is usually there) one of the employes kept asking me what was wrong, I told him and he said they did not scratch them. I said I just wanted to talk to the owner. When I finally talked to the owner she said that the employee I talked to said I was cursing, yelling and screaming, and threatening them. I was stunned. I came very close to suing them but ended up letting it go and just making sure to get the word out. So anyone who is reading these in Orlando, don't use them if you care about your car.

It's been these kind of incidents at two other shops as well. One where they scratched up my engine bay, another where they sat around talking for 20-30 mins while I waited in the waiting room (dashcam). All kinds of BS. So I went back to the dealership.

I wont say the name of the dealership I stopped going to since we had an informal agreement to keep the issues I've had with them off of review sites and forums If I got paid for damage they did. But I will say I am glad that you have had such an amazing experience at Winter park. Wink.

I now drive an hour and a half to a dealership that may or may not be to the west of Orlando in an attempt to get my car fixed hassle free (I thought the techs would at least be more informed than the ones I had been to) for a little extra money paid... but it doesn't appear to be panning out.

I may end up trying another indy shop if this dealership doesn't make things right.

Just wanted to give you guys an update. The dealership finally admitted after I pressured them for diag codes (for a week straight, one to two calls a day), that in fact they were the same codes being thrown for the first trip (valve cover) and the second trip (covered fuel pump) and that the valve cover did nothing. I will receive a refund in the mail. I am convinced the service manager didn't know that the SA was trying to legitimize the valve cover and drag his feet on the diag codes as he seemed genuinely pissed and said "he should not have done that" and "I've told him that he is not to be yadda yadda yadda..." among other things with the SA standing right there. They are also going to pay for the paint scratches to be buffed out and gave me a new cabin air filter cover they also scratched.

So all in all I am happy with the outcome. I honestly think it helped that I was recording every conversation I had with the dealership (they were informed at the front end of each call so it was all nice and legal and could be used in court later). So I think the SA knew if he didn't fess up that they might be getting screwed in court later.

Also, my car is still running like crap and I thought for sure it was going to throw another reduced power warning today (first cold start since I got her back). It started and idled that badly...

Hopefully another shop will know what is wrong and fix it. Maybe all I need is a carbon cleaning. We'll see.

Thanks for the help guys.
