Newbie with '01 525i Wagon - should I keep it?

Thanks for the insight and compliments. Up until recently, I have done TONS of DIY (try having a '69 Cougar and '72 Luxury LeMans as your only daily drivers in modern times- we looked cool but I did a lot of wrenching). A couple yrs ago Ipersonally changed the Trans in a hand-me-down car due to need. Now, with a toddler, I can't take on the DIY cars for a long while... As much as I (and my wife & friends, etc. ) dig this car, I need to pass it on.

I drove it to my n'hood Trans shop just to get codes pulled. Strangely, it seemed to shift fine to me... Though I probly only got to 3rd gear in that short distance...maybe 4th and or 5th is blown??

As for repairs, I missed one of the pages of the report- it shows getting the AC head unit replaced, as well as new wheel caps. Suspension wise, the left fr control arm was replaced. I'm still waiting for the earlier service history...

As far as I can tell, this car has all but a couple if options (main one being the Nav).

2nd Opinion

Mio, PM Sent.

********************
I just got a call from the neighborhood trans shop. This guy is NOT a Bimmer specialist but they did a decent job with my old clunker and have a 2-year warranty.

The guy says he only pulled 2 codes off of the car (of course he had cleared them before calling so I don't know the #'s). Anyway, he says that he is just pulling a bad torque converter on the trans. Since it is a sealed unit he cant tell any more internally without taking it apart. He says he thinks the seal at the back of the converter went out, and that was the loud "boom that went off like a cannon" that our friend, the owner witnessed. According to him, "this is a common failure in these cars."

He is quoting $1100 to change out the TC, and then they would do further exploration for damage while the trans was apart.

The other item he detected was a bad coolant temperature sensor which he said would cost about $40 to replace.

Other than these codes, the car is "immaculate" in his words.

I have decided to Sell

Thanks to all who have posted on this thread and communicated with me.

I have come to the tough decision to sell, for a few reasons. The final clincher though... My folks just gave me their old car instead of trading it in. Although it is only about 1 million times less sexy than this fine machine, I can't argue with Free.

I am going to start a new thread in the classifieds section on the forum. I'm hoping it can go to someone here who can fix it up, or....GULP...cut it up. Its been brought to my attention that there are a lot of good, valuable parts on the car.

Exclamation Car is SOLD

Thanks to everyone on the forum who has shared info on this Wagon, and made offers to purchase. I sold the car for $2800 locally. She went to a good home, the guy who bought her has her twin in his driveway - except his car's front end was demolished in a wreck. He credits that car for saving his girlfriend's life - she literally walked away without a scratch.
