However, leaving the car sit overnight with VANOS unplugged changed nothing. I still have zero compression when cold start is attempted...
It would recieve instructions to be closed.

Thats the signal the solenoid is getting:
0 - idle and regular driving normal operating oil pressures
1 - WOT/high rev - subsequently elevated oil pressure

lopey idle means its advancing timing. Im sticking to my guns here on a busted solenoid.

When its unplugged idle seems fine? Chain tensioner pulls the cam back in time and vanos is retarded.

I dont know. Enough to stall an idling car it seems

2. At what rpm does the system 'normally' activate?
also dont know this exactly

3. What sensor/values does the DME read before issuing a VANOS activation command?
I assume revs and throttle position

I have already verified there is no 'dribble' from the injectors and the port floors and cylinders are not wet with fuel. I will check and report other test conditions at lunch today...
I would say that a VANOS would advance timing enough to open valve to point of total compression loss. i believe 7k rpms or close to it is valve float.

I appreciate your input, Monsignor. This is my first BMW and first real VANOS experience...

Ok,
after lots of research, I have come across only ONE problem like mine where the engine was NOT replaced. The owner pulled the cover to find one cam grossly advanced, to such a degree that the cam holding fixtures would not slide into place.

He replaced both tensioners and that seems to have fixed it.

FYI...

holy sh!t. ^thats it. it is the tensioners. timing is advanced and the tensioners cannot pull the chain back to normal operation time. Its only after its running that it slowly twists back on its axis.

Replace both.

Tensioner between Cams $43

Main timing chain tension $19

I think you could be correct!!!

ironic the tensioners failed with less than 100,000 on the clock, don't you think????

Yes...sealing rings in both easily replaced. If that corrects the problem, and no valves are bent, then I will proceed with new units.

I don't want to invest too much on this $500.00 E34, since it still needs a Heater Pump, General Module ending in '571' Front Door Panels and Lower Rear Seat Halve.

Still have no power windows, door locks, power sunroof and low and mid-speed wipers with all fuses/connections verified as good, so that has me more concerned than the timing chain issue.

Awesome. I really think this will be it. deductive reasoning has me feeling confident.

My wife is very eager to take delivery of this car. It was just repainted complete B/C-C/C (by a colleague), but needs to be buffed out. Everything stopped when the timing chain problem appeared...

UPDATE:

Oil added to cylinders has no effect - cranking compression is still zero. With throttle blocked (WOT) compression impulse can be heard exiting into the intake manifold.

Yep, this M50 is outta time...
