XM Sat cut out

Does anyone else have an issue with XM. We I travel under a overpass, bridge, etc., 4 secs later my XM will cut out. Is there a way to amp up the antenna so this will not happen?

XM Sat cut out

Happens to me once in a while, especially if the overpass is multiple lanes (quite a few of those here in Atlanta) or real slow traffic under the overpass.

Me too. And lately it's been cutting without being under anything. Sunspots?

I experience this as well in the DC Metro area and it drives me nuts! Is their any way to improve reception, boost signal, improve hardware?

BMW replaced my whole radio system, & installed a outside antenna, with no improvement. A 2500.00 under warranty replacement. The dealer is the only one that benefited from the replacement. The antenna is mounted in the trunk lid, from the factory.

The Satellites?

The satellites are in our Southern sky, so anytime you are going East/West, the system will drop out if you keep your car occluded from the Sothern sky long enough. Same is true for overpasses, etc no matter your heading. This has been the case in every car I have had w XM or Sirius. Esecially fun on the drive east of Charleston WV on their turnpike - great curves, lousy reception as you are working your way around big hills! I hook up the iPod and enjoy the view!

I thought most of the major cities had an array of ground transmitters ringing the area that augmented the satellite signal...? I have an old XM SkyFi that can show you signal strength on both. In cities it always seems to have 4 or 5 (of 5) bars for terrestrial, and sometimes only 1 for satellite. I do not know the design details of our satellite (SDARS, I think?) tuners but I wonder if the terrestrial tuning capability could be augmented (if present at all)... Sounds like a fun DIY for our Electrical Engineer members!

These cars are notorious for poor satellite reception. It has been discussed many times. Some who have really bad reception have gone to the dealer and were retrofitted with an additional antenna and booster. See Whitedesigns post in the following thread. The antenna is in the trunk lid.

Bentley Manual...

I have the paper copy of the 5-series 2004-2010. Page 650-3 shows a view of components inside the shark fin found on most BMW's except ours. Item #4 at the forward base is labelled as "SDARS for Terrestrial Reception". So they do indeed use both and I am sure that we would find both under our decklids or wherever else they hide the various antennas... I could look it up on TIS, but too lazy this morning!

Get this quite a bit in Boston; seems more severe in summer months when trees are bushier. Didn't realize XM was so "line of sight". Have the same issue in my Saab as the 6, right down to common spots for cutting out

I suspect that the Sat cutting out is a buffering issue. I had a newer portable unit in my 99 E39 and I rarely had the unit cut out when driving beneath underpasses, a heavily tree lined route, etc. I installed a factory Sat unit in my wife's 2007 Lexus and have taken the same routes as I did in my E39 and find that it cuts out under these conditions. I just purchased my 2010 E63 and have not yet taken it on the same routes so I cannot report on it just yet.

XM and Sirius used different technology. That's why they still haven't fully intergraded the two. XM supplemented with ground antenna. Sirius did not but used a technology that worked a little better with just Sat connection. They are merging the two and I don't know which way they are going. They have to keep both systems up because of all the cars made with installed equipment.

I haven't read anything about it in a long time. But, I think our cars work with the older Sirius equipment, which means line of sight to the bird or it'll cut out.
