Anticipating an F30?

I'm not sure how appropriate this post is...I'll let the moderator decide, but many of "us" (E90...) owners, like me (recently) may be transitioning...looking at F30s. I acquired one several weeks ago.

It's not my intention to "trash" the F30, but to report a disturbing trend.

At 96 miles my car indicated a "drivetrain malfunction" error code on the dash display and went into limp mode. It has been in the shop for four days with an (apparently) serious engine failure. The dealer has indicated a "VANOS" problem. Parts are back ordered.

My dealer indicated a VANOS "bolt" problem...another poster claimed a similar repair (bolt?), but my car hasn't been repaired as parts are not available.

I've spent some time on the Internet searching for similar F30 "drivetrain malfunction" complaints and have found 21 individual complaints at very low mileage (only looking at 328i complaints...there were others from F10s). These "complaints" were posted in 2013, mostly for 2013 cars...a few 2012 models.

Six of them indicated "VANOS" problems. Others are "undetermined" (still in the shop...some for weeks).

Those contemplating an F30 purchase should be 'Googling' "drivetrain malfunction" and watching...waiting for an answer to this "situation."

HPFP dejavu (although this is not related to fuel pumps).

Knowledge is power.

There is a reason why some of us refuse to get a brand new generation of a car and wait until we're about 3-4 years away from EOL.

Hope your car gets healthy again soon. At least it is a lease (if I recall in your case) and under warranty. Still frustrating though at such low mileage to have issue.

OP that sucks especially on a car with just a few miles on it. I hope it's not a serious issue or foreshadowing on things to come down the road. My E90 has made it out of warranty and despite the naysayers I am going to keep it for a while.

The N53 (double vanos) engine is looking pretty rock solid now, isn't it? The jury is still out on the early F30 "glitches" although a fair amount of them seem to be vanos related. This doesn't necessarily cast a shadow on the N20 engine.
