Ouch!

My wife borrowed my car the other day, I told her not to park it anywhere she could get a door ding from some inconsiderate bastard. I forgot to tell her not to get rammed! It bent the door frame, so they have to cut the entire rear quarter panel off the car and weld a new one on!
$10,000 damage from a parking lot idiot! Has anyone heard of being able to collect for diminished value due to an accident?

That should buff right out....

In all honesty, i think they just want to bill for the material and labor. I can't imagine replacing the whole quarter panel just for that bottom section, unless there alot of damage in that door panel. I'd rather just replace that bottom section then have the whole thing replaced.

I'd definitely look into whether your state and insurance takes diminished value into consideration.

I'd expect your carfax report to most likely show that as an accident and resale value to take a pretty big hit.

The door frame is bent in, that is an integral part of the unibody. The only correct fix is to replace the quarter panel to maintain structural integrity. I don't have a problem with the fix, I have a problem with the a**hole that roared back out of their parking spot without looking!

Wow that is upsetting but things happen. That doesn't look to bad its very low to the ground and a good body shop will make it look bran new again. You better price the repair out first before you contact your insurance carrier because they will "RAM" your insurance Premium. This i just why i tell my wife "Babe you know you can't just park anywhere right" and "Babe you know that this car is very long and difficult to handle right" and she replies "well you're right" and i just turn and smile :-) while walking away then i go hide the key...... LOL

that is an ouch, but see if you can pocket the 10K and try to straighten it out somehow. I had this done to my e39 M5, and it didn't turn out too bad but I always "felt" there some structural integrity issues.

BMW has a high end body shop in towson md, that is who I am taking it to. The accident happened as my wife was leaving, we have the idiot that hit her and she owned up to it. the claim is against her ins co. the dor frame is kinked, no way to straighten it out. the tire and rim were also damaged, and I just bought them two days before the accident. I am more concerned about getting it fixed right, than the cost. The ins co wanted to give me an impala as a rental, claiming they only pay for a comparable car. I told them I would take any $110,000 car the rental company had!. best they had was a Cadillac CTS-4 hardly a match!

Theres no way the ins would pay for a new quarter panel on that damage, they can heat that and pull it back to new. I wouldn't change the 1/4 for that. Hope you get it straightened out.

so has anyone heard of getting anything for diminished value? would you expect to pay less for a car that had been in an accident where the entire rear quarter panel had been replaced even though the repairs were don very well?

That's funny, my wife hates to drive my car also. She gets all worked up once something starts beeping at her or she cant figure out how to do the simple things. She prefers to be up higher in her SUV.

Back in June when my son wrecked my car and were unsure if it was going to be totaled or not I asked my State Farm agent and he said no to diminished value.

IMO, the quarter panel doesnt need replacing, it involves a lot of drilling, chiseling, spot welding for such a small dent which can be pulled out.

if you try to pull it out you end up with bondo, and the seals underneath to the metal are trash and you will end up with rust. I would rather have it returned to orig

ok, i work with body and paint, replacing a quarterpanel (if you see how its done) is quite disheartening to remove the panel, we grind the paint and expose the spot welds, then drill each spot weld out, after drilling, chisel the outer panel from the inner panel, cut off the quaterpanel from the C-Pillar, beat out the chiselled panels, align new quaterpanel then spot weld in spots were there are no welds, then primer, re-seal, paint.......so IMO, u might want to think about the whole procedure very well....remember if you spot weld, you "burn" both metals to bond with each other...and that could also rust. you will also be removing the seats, roofliner, rear glass, trunk accessories and wiring, and maybe the rear supension.

but have it fixed the way you want it, its yours. just saying that there are weld on dent pullers which might do the fix faster and less pain to the car.

Sorry to hear that; it's extremely painful when someone recklessly damages your car.
I wish you can get it fixed in the way that works best for you, I would, however, take into account what bruno mentions. It's not very exciting to have half of your car taken apart with that many things which can go wrong in the process.

I had success with diminished value.
last year our 93 turbo Z was hit by a truck on rear quarter. No frame damage, just cosmetic. I contacted the other guy's Ins. co and notify them that I will not sign Release until DM is paid. It was a long and drawn out process, but I had all the time in the world to wait. They finally paid! Key is not to give in. Evaluate your vehicle and determine the DV amount. Stick with it until they agree. DO NOT SIGN any release until you are paid.

the body shop and the other woman's ins agreed the 1/4 panel needed to be pulled to repair the damage behind it. This is at a BMW collision center, they handle only high end cars. They have a new process of rivits and bonding. They showed me how it worked on a porsche panamara there that had the engine rail bent and they were replacing it. They are going to do a photo journal of the repair, and have invited me to come in at each critical point.

first, they are replacing the wheel and tire so I can go to the bmw HPDE I have already paid for. then they will repair it after the track event.

Great, sounds like she will be just like new after. How much is the estimate?

Just curious, what is a video registrar? You mean a dashcam or some other type recording device? I ask because Im trying to find some sort of camera that records 360, when someone approaches the car when its parked, if even such a thing exists.
