2006 BMW 325i radio diplay problems

Hi,
I recently bought a 2006 e90 BMW 325i and the radio display is impossible to read during the day. I can read it at night only because the orange background brings out the black letters that should be lit up. I tried resetting the battery but it didn't work. I will probably end up replacing the entire unit or just the display itself. Is there something I can do to save +$200? If so what is it?
Thanks

This problem is from the last Century

BMW has been using the same type display strip since the 90's
You can replace the strip or send it in .
Caution if you send it in and they give you a replacement unit it must
be programmed for the same options you have that are radio enabled or they won't
work without enabling them in the new Head Unit. Such as PDC, Bluetooth or SOS.

I have the same problem with my 2006 e91. For me, it's a temperature issue - if it's above 70 degrees, I can't read the display. If it's cooler, then it's no problem even in the daytime. The local dealer told me it would cost ~$500 to replace, but it would be replaced with the same gel stype display.
