For those of you (I6 engine) who need a new Alternator

For those of you (I6 engine) who need a new Alternator, I just saw this one ebay. The seller says this is brand-new, not rebuilt.

In fact, you now pay $260 for the wishy washy rebuilt alternator at your local auto parts store!

So, at $260, it is a very good price for a brand-new alternator. The Bosch PN cross-references to many different PNs.
Chances are this unit fits all E39 I6 engines...

Awesome find!!!!!
I'm tempted, but I will prolly rebuild mine. The downside is, it will take a day or so.
The only thing I'm missing is a new slip ring.

I wonder if I should go for this "garage sales" thingy...
The problem is this part may sit on the garage shelf collecting dusts for the next 2-3 years, or I might need it tomorrow.
Who knows....

Interesting... Look at the cooling duct "leaf catcher" / debris filter:

I wonder when that was added?

1+,

Gutter Guard is a good option, any leaves is easy to spot and cleaned with a garden hose during car wash.

I had a hard time doing this, but can someone confirm that the early V8s (prevanos) used this same 120a Bosch alternator?

They look similar, but have different part numbers. Wonder what the exact difference is.

GreenTiger,

I think V8 engine used different different alternators (early years: air-cooled, later years: water-cooled).

cn90, I am aware of that. Maybe I was not clear, but my question was what is the difference between the air cooled v8 alternators and the I6 alternators (which are all air cooled)?
Thanks

Greentiger you'll have to trace where the inlet is on the V-8, on the I6 it comes in very low directly to the outside front lip spoiler. The V-8 may have it come in some where else. Looking at realoem for 540's it look very similar to the set up on the e34 I6 where the air came in higher and the inlet was behind the grill making the odds of leaves getting in nil. If you can just follow the duct and see.

small 525, the air ducting on the V8 come in straight from the front bumper, comes in low and goes up sharply to the alternator. This ensures that no water can get to the alternator. Not sure about leaves and other debris...

Will do more research.

This is how the air intake duct looks like.

Using realoem to compare it looks like the V-8 and I6 are the same in the picture yet parts don't interchange. I'd say there is no real difference.

A few choices/options, your car so you decide.

1. take off the duct and don't worry about leaves, some say this is what they do, sort of.
2. you can adapt the front intake with a filter, there's a DIY in the best links, (cn90 posted it earlier) some use gutter guard like shown, I use a scotchbrite "wedged in" so no need to remove anything and drill holes.
3. after every service oil or inspection remove the duct and back of the alt. Not too hard on the scale, and then clean out what may have collected.

Hi champaign777,

Once you receive it, take photos and post your experience.
I "might" buy it as a spare (I have 140K now on factory alternator).

How many miles when your alternator failed?

my problem was in wrong pulley installation , alternator was good
taking in consideration 15% restocking fee + shipping ( if y send it back ) i installed a new alternator
and will keep the old one as a spare
Bosch is a Bosch , nothing can beat it even it is made in Mexico so far so good
