I have a 2014 X1..we noticed today that the speedometer is over 7 to 10 miles over what we see on the "vehicle information"..Has anyone else experienced this?

Depends on your speed. I think my speedometer is about 5 mph higher based on GPS readings. The odometer is accurate though

I think there's a few more 1st-time BMW owners here than some of the other forums. That's a good thing, BTW.

Technically, I'm still a zero-time BMW owner. We ordered one in July and its still in Germany awaiting a vessel. Even when it gets here, it will be my wife's car (thus the screen name), so its debatable if I'll even be a BMW owner once I sign the paperwork!

I set my scangauge II on the ledge below the speedo, and it covers the fuel guage which I'm not going to read either.

The Scanguage has lots of data that one can scroll through, but I keep 4 parameters up: MPH (exact), coolant temp, horsepower, and turbo boost.

All these are programed out of box.

The X1 speedo is high, the fuel gauge showed 1/8 tank, but I had only .6 gallons left, no coolant temp or boost.

My setup is user friendly for me, and it's in all three of my cars.

I did some testing with my ODBII and torque.

I'm seeing about 7% difference between the speedometer and GPS.

The mph reported from the X1's computer via OBDII+torque is about 1% less than what GPS shows, maybe underestimated for warranty?

My rule of thumb is take 10% of whatever speed your doing and add 2 mph to get your speed. So basically if you see 73mph on the speedometer you do 7-2 = 5 difference and you get 68mph. Absolutely annoying to do but when you drive where 3-4 over is fine but and 5 makes a ticket and you don't want to be the slowest on the road then you've got to do this. I can't explain how much I wish you could code a % offset for the speedometer...

+1 for a pic of the ScanGauge II setup, I really want to see that! I'd be very interested in getting one for my X1, if it doesn't look too ugly & out of place...

Scangauge II Pics

First pic is main 4 parameters I use.

Second is under trips you can get current, todays, or previous days info which also gives highest temp, and speed. Very helpful to hide on car when someone else (teenager) is driving.

Third is average mpg, and gallons per hour; too much to tell you about including performance like 0-60 times.

The main gauges that are useful are the odometer and the tach; The fuel gauge said I had 1/8 tank, but I put in 15.5 gallons. The average miles can't be compared to the driving that got it.

So the scangauge told me I got exactly 29 mpg on first tank, 31 on second tank, and 32 on 3rd and 4th.

It also told me that the alternator was charging 14.7 volts on that 29mpg tank, 20 seconds each at 14.7 and 13.6 back and forth on the 31 mpg tank, and 13.6 down to 12.3 on the 32 mpg tanks.

So my 1600 mile road trip got the battery charged up after about 800 miles which indicates you might be able to get 1 or 2 more mpg if you get a battery tender, and keep battery at complete charge before any driving.

Short trips around town will never charge it, and the battery is more likely to die sooner.

So when it's fully charged, and you get off gas it will go from 12.6 volts to 13.7 to get something out of the decel instead of just brake heat.

Be careful dialing down speed with cruise since it has dynamic braking, and will brake to get that lower speed quicker. I just turn off cruise going down hills if possible then pick right speed to reset cruise.

Another thing is: under light accel the boost hits 5 psi so driving around town gets some efficiency. Total boost spikes at 16 psi, but settles down quickly to 12 psi.

I'm pretty sure I can get 34 mpg, but it's at 55-60 mph, charged battery, and the wind to back wouldn't hurt.

When I drove 75 it seemed that I'd get 30mpg

When I drove from Denver to Aspen over the Continental at 12k ft, the roads were 30 to 45 to 60 mph, and I got 32 mpg there to back to Santa Fe driving 450 miles; the most I'd try.

0w40X1 - do you think that the advantages of the ScanGaugeII outweigh the decreased cost of the ScanGaugeE? The features are very similar. One big difference is the size - the ScanGaugeII can show 4 items on a screen while the ScanGaugeE is limited to 2. But this might actually be an advantage for the E, depending upon how much real estate you want to give up.

Curious to get your thoughts.

I'm personally going to get the ultragauge, $60 right now and has a bigger and more customizable display. Reminds me of Torque but I won't have to pull out my phone each time I get in the car.

Absolutely!

The ScanGaugeE is essentially the trip side of the ScanGaugeII which parameters can be made to come to the front four via x-gauge.

I only paid about $138 for my ScanGaugeII from RV World (Google is your friend).

I get coolant temp, volts, boost, horsepower, average mpg, mpg, etc. on the front that I can cycle in any of 4 positions.

It's easier to see mph on the ScanGaugeII than the BMW gauge behind it.

BMW made an incredible car that you can ignore, and it'll ignore you, but I'd say the ScanGuageII is the BMW of gauges.

My X1 has the 3rd one I've bought; your instant mpg readings will tell you how to get your best mpg, and easily pay for itself.

I'm looking for transmission and oil temp codes to program.

It also has a new performance feature to measure 0-60 or 60-0 performance, but I haven't got that to work , yet.

I know how fast it is on a certain track that I can compare to other drivers videos or I could get my own G-pro.

Well wouldn't you expect a German engineered car to be precise.

Absolutely agree. I want an accurate speedometer not one that has been messed with so I do not get tickets (since I assume that this is the reason they indicate a higher mph than actual). Let me be the judge of what speed I should be doing not fool me because I am apparently too stupid to make the correct judgement. I think BMW speedometer's are an insult to my intelligence and I resent it. One of the few things I do not like about them in general. And yes this has been an issue with BMW for years.

When I see a radar speed read out on the street, it's spot on what I know I'm doing.

I can read a speed digit much easier than looking at where the needle is pointing, then, deciding what number it's near, especially when I know the needle is wrong.

When you get the ultragauge installed, can you post a pic?

I am not really bothered by the price difference between the ultragauge, the ScanGaugeE and the ScanGaugeII. My biggest concern is size in relation to the clean lines of the cockpit. I have the nav so that space is unavailable, and I don't really like the idea of covering up the existing gauges. Before I pull the trigger, I want to have a good sense of how it will look when mounted.
