I'm assuming no oil cooler?

Just want an ez yes or no answer about whether my 328 has an oil cooler or not, although I think I already know this answer! Seeing an oil TEMP gauge, as I had in my 370Z, I figure means " You AINT got an oil cooler, so keep a good eye on how hot your oil is getting!" Not that I need one in a 328i, but I would like to feel better protected if I get a little pedal happy in the summer heat!

I doubt it since it doesn't even have turbos.

No oil cooler on the 328.

Actually, I was surprised at your saying you have an oil temp gauge in a 328. Back when I was looking at both, the 335 had oil temp and the 328 had a mpg gauge in its place.

This should help you identify whether you have a cooler - though as has been said, unlikely with a NA engine...though you might have one of the water/oil heat exchangers.

Newer 328 has an oil temp gauge in lower part of the tachometer.

I have an oil cooler and an oil temp gage, so it is not mutually exclusive. N4S

I've owned my 13 328i sport and M packages for two weeks. I am not that familiar with the engine and other mechanical components. Maybe I have one also, but I do not know.

+This. Although I would have just said "NO".

COUPES have an oil temp gauge, though I'm not sure if it's restricted to certain years.

Do our cars go into limp mode if too high an oil temp is reached?

It was my understanding that sport package gets an oil cooler but without that option then no oil cooler. But either way if you have one it is very very easy to see inside the front of the RF wheel well.

Or you could have a heat exchanger which bolts on to the oil filter housing (item 9 in the diagram):

If it got there, it would.

However, as I have NEVER seen a report of an oil overtemp on a 328 (excluding water pump / thermostat failures), I don't expect to see one in the future. Hell, I have a 335 without an oil cooler, and I've never come close to an oil temperature limp mode, even on 105+ degree days. People living in the hotter states run them in high temps all the time without issues.

Based on the earlier post, my 2012 328i M pack doesn't have the oil t stat as shown in the images, but it does have this. Either on oil cooler or trans cooler or PS cooler. I've not followed the lines back to their origin yet.

That's the water/oil heat exchanger shown in post #11, but mounted in a different place in the engine bay. So could be for the PS fluid rather than the engine oil. You'll have to trace the pipes...
