Fog Light Feature?

While waiting to turn left behind a pickup this morning, and admiring my headlights in his tailgate, I noticed the driver side fog light was on. It went off with the turn signal (noticed at next light) and did not happen on the right side in a similar situation. Anyone else experience this "feature"?

My 335d with Adaptive Xenons have the cornering fog light that turns on one side in the direction the tire is moved towards.

It turns off after the turn.

Makes it easy to see the curb when I leave the driveway.

Is that what you mean ?

It does it even without the turn signal on, like when I enter my driveway.

Yes, it is a very nice feature.

Did your X1 come with Xenons or do all X1 have the cornering light standard ???

My 335d was an option that came with the Xenon adaptive lighting pkg.

I do have adaptive xenons. I guess I'll investigate further. The front wheels were pointed straight ahead, waiting to turn left at the light, with the turn signal on. Does that make sense?

Yes, that's what mine does with the signal on.

It's actually not the fog lights, it's the inner light in the dual package (is high beams in most cars.)

On the X1 it definitely comes from the lower foglamp housing in the bumper (M Sport package).

Hmmm. Different than E9x. Maybe it allows them to have a cheaper headlamp assemply.

That and the headlamp is higher up, so maybe some regulations on lamp height come into play.

Well, consensus seems to be that this actually is a feature, and not an electrical short, although I would not have expected the fog lamp to be part of the adaptive headlight system.

Re: Fog Light Feature?

I've noticed some other cars here in Germany are getting this feature besides BMW's. The newer golfs and jettas do the same thing. I would imagine for VW the feature won't make it stateside.

It's not just a feature. It's an awesome feature. Biggest surprise of my X1, actually. I thought it was a gimmick when I read about it but it ROCKS at night on twisty roads that don't have street lamps. If you look at the fog lamps you'll see there's a little gap in part of the reflector where the portion that rotates to focus the beam is.

Although the headlights move with adaptive lighting, I am almost certain that the fog lights do not. They turn on to illuminate a wider area when the headlights are on, the vehicle is going 25mph or less and the directional is engaged. They also turn on when in reverse. I could be wrong but that is how they worked on my X5's and I am pretty certain that is the way they work on my X1.

Thumbs up adaptive feature

Also have the adaptive feature on my X1, and also thought there was something amiss until I tested it by driving towards a reflective surface in the dark ( yes yes carefully, in an empty parking lot ). The fog light on the side of the direction of the turn comes on when you turn the steering wheel, and goes off when you straighten up. Maybe you had the steering wheel slightly turned when you were admiring your lights in the truck's tailgate ( who could resist that?). Hint : If you do this test towards big plate glass windows there will be some nice admiration time for you too !
