Berlin Brandenburg airport

Man, just as BMW is in the midst of a huge supply chain snafu concerning spare parts for maintenance work worldwide, the oft delayed Brandenburg airport gets more bad news. At this rate, I'm not sure it will ever be finished. The "superior German design, engineering, planning, and logistics label" seems to be taking a hit.

They started this project in 2006, just 1.5 years after I last visited, and it was supposed to open in 2010, then 2012, then 2013, now, who knows.

Sad to see, but I guess every country is susceptible to this kind of incompetence.

It's incompetence paired with running out of money and tremendous opposition from the population. The perfect storm for failure.

Anyone that has ever flown into Berlin knows that Berlin needs a new airport. Nobody wants it in their backyard though.

A lot of people were against the closing of Tempelhof Airport, which is in town of Berlin. It turned into a park now. I even rode a bike on the runway last year.

All of Berlin's airports are very old and not equipped to handle current traffic demands. Schoenefeld is the old eastern German aiport, Tempelhof was primarily used for cargo flights, and Tegel was the "big" commercial airport. 1 runway, 1 terminal (they built a temporary additional terminal some years ago) and not equipped to handle international transfers (you are escorted to your next gate since the secure areas of the gates do not connect).

It's a huge mess.

I am aware of the situations with Berlin's airports. Funny that the East got a brand new autobahn (A113), and that my 2008 Garmin GPS showed that I was driving right across Schönefeld airport's runway.

+1 I flew into Schonefeld once and I was shocked at the state of the place in 04.
