Real world pictures of the i8 in Crystal White and Sophisto Grey
At the Frankfurt Auto Show BMW officially revealed their sustainable super car, the i8. Believe it or not these pictures are the production version. Yes, it looks like a concept car but that is what you'll be seeing on the streets in the US next spring. The i8 is powered by the rear wheels with a 3 cylinder, 1.5 liters 231 hp gasoline engine. Then it gets weird, the front wheels are powered independently by a electric motor borrowed from the i3 that makes 131 hp. While total horsepower is hardly super car territory the i8 is feather light thanks to a mostly carbon fiber chassis. The hybrid drive also puts power down from zero RPMs slingshotting the i8 off the line and to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds. That is faster then an E92 M3 and just brushing into super car territory, all while getting an adjusted 94 MPG. Now that is an interesting combination of performance and fuel economy.
Impressive technical numbers and details aside super cars are bought because of how they make us feel, not because the numbers make sense. It is a $135K car, it would take a long time to make that up in fuel savings. Does the i8 connect with you on an emotional level the way a Ferrari or Lamborghini does?
