You saw it happen? Couldn't get a plate ID? Hit & run...so you're not at fault and your insurance rate won't be increased...but what a bummer with a new car!

Any possibility that there were security cameras on local stores, businesses?

I've been thinking about a dash mounted GoPro camera for months...and it's stories like this that move me closer to getting one.

Good luck.

Didn't even see it happen. I just noticed it on my way back from the store. I'm not worried about the insurance or fixing it. I'm just pissed that people are built that way. What a coward to hit someones car and leave. After any accident it alters the car and paint.

This happened to me in March...right outside my house. Ended up having to have the entire driver's door replaced. I will say that the garage that I used to do the body work was EXCELLENT.

My 335i got backed into before my license plates arrived from DMV. Hit and run. $500.

I wont able to lie say I wouldnt be furious. If your paying a 500 dollar deductible for a hit and run tho you need to find a new insurance company, or get better coverage. Car is way to expensive to cheap out on your insurance.

$500 to repaint the rear bumper, not $500 deductible. And I don't make insurance claims for less than $2000 unless it's a comprehensive claim. Ain't worth it in the long run.

you need a couple of cheap dash cams, I run a livue dashcam, pretty small, works great, can do 2 channels so you can have one front and rear if you want - records all events if the car senses any movement when parked and they are only around 100 bucks - worth the peace of mind in my book.

How are they powered on when the car is parked? I'm really interested as I park on the streets of chicago.

Not if your windows get broken so the cams can be stolen.

Quite true, but I always remove my window mounted GPS from the car when not using it (suction cup mount).

This may not be enough, however as I noticed a sign at a remote parking lot for Boston's Logan Airport that read: "Remove GPS suction cup mount traces from your inner windshield as thieves may break into your car. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items."

You just can't win.

A good dash cam will have a voltage sensor and a shock sensor.

The shock sensor will turn the camera on when it senses movement. ie when a car hits your car.

The voltage sensor will monitor battery voltage and turn the camera off when the voltage drops too low.
