2010 550i M Sport

Hi, I am looking at buying a 550i and I saw a deal for a 2010 550i with less than 50k miles on it. It's about 250 miles from my place so currently I am relying on photos to do the initial screening before I travel the distance for a test drive. The dealership (not a BMW dealer) says it has M sport on it but it's not listed on the 'Installed Options/Packages' along with Cold weather, navigation etc.
The steering wheel does have a //M symbol on it on the lower spoke but the wheels don't look like a 19" M wheels. Also, door sill has BMW stamped on the steel sill (not sure a M sports package will read //M instead). Also the headliners are not anthracite gray (I read somewhere it's a default option on the M sport) but its more of that default light gray color.

Are there any easy ways to identify the M sports package? Thanks.

I think the previous owner did an after market M bumper's and possibly the M steering wheel..

If you can get the vin number there are links on this site to a few vin decoders that will tell you a lot about its options.

Thanks for the replies!!
The last 7 digits of the VIN is CT57326 and according to the Vin decoders mentioned in this forum it has a M design steering wheel installed. "S710A M Lederlenkrad M leather steering wheel". Does this mean it has the M sports package or just the Steering wheel? Also, does "S677A HiFi System Professional DSP" means it has premium sound system?

Thanks!

I would not buy from a Non BMW dealer, I would prefer to get some maintenance warranty on a 2010 550I - these cars are not cheap to fix and could leave you with a bad taste in your mouth - if the previous owner or this dealer got this car from a troubled situation.

IMHO

Shouldn't matter if its a non-BMW dealership if the history and condition of the car checks out. From what I've experienced so far, a 3rd party warranty covers more than the BMW warranty anyway (ie. control arms, which is awesome)....

When I decode mine, I'm showing the style 172 wheels, the M-sport suspension, the comfort seats, M-aero, etc. I'm thinking the car you're looking at is NOT an M-sport as yours doesn't list any of that...

Thanks for the replies. From what I have read and from what I felt during test drive, buying a 550i without sports package is not worthwhile so I will continue my search.

Thanks again for the replies. I know I am kind of answering a question that I answered myself above, but how big of a difference does the Sports package make to the performance of the cars? I read many threads while some people swear by it others said they could barely notice the difference. The difference I felt was between a 535i without Sports Package and a 545i with sports package. Whereas I am now in the market for a 550i and the car I am looking at doesn't seems to have that option.

Thanks.

Actually if I"m not mistaken, the M-Sport package included all of the suspension, wheels and aero goodies for 2010 model year...the only year it was listed officially as an actual package. 2008-2009 it was simply called the sport package with "M-sport" components like the aero bits, wheels, and suspension. No difference between the three years other than name. It was far from just cosmetic. It became an appearance item starting with the F10 (well, actually the last couple of years of the E90, but that's getting into the nitty gritty)...

Huge difference for sure in appearance. I can't quantify the driving aspect as I've never driven a non-sport, but everything from the seats to the exterior adornments are well worth the wait for a Sport/M-Sport 550:

Non-M-sport 550:

Sport/M-Sport 550:

F1.tifosi: Thanks for your inputs.

@jim165: Best example for the visual difference between the sport and the non-sport version I have seen yet. Thanks for taking the time to put the photos together. Very helpful!

Mein Auto: 550i
I spent over a year looking for a perfect 550i for my wife. Year (09), Color combo, Options, mileage 16800. Then I spent another year searching for my 550i, same stuff (10) + ventilated seats and 29k mileage. Use vin decoder to look up options and do a lot of reading on BMW forums. I believe to get M door seals and M steering wheel you had to opt for sport tranny with steering wheel pedals. Perhaps this was only 2010 option. In any way I wouldn't buy 550i without sports package and m-aero body kit. Without the body kit and 172 rims the car is nothing special. There is a slight difference between S255A SPORT-LEDERLENKRAD and S710A M LEDERLENKRAD steering wheels. You don't want the standard, non sport steering wheel!
Keep hunting and you will find your dream car.

options for E60 535i I believe based on fuel consumption listed.
2010:
2009 hm... I think M-Aero and Sport package had to be ordered separately.
2008
19" 172 wheels only came with 550i.

More info here, here and here

Don't but a 550 without the Sport Pkg. You would regret that decision.

Thanks for all the replies. Just to get a quick feel from Bimmer fans, assuming everything such as Carfax, maintenance records and the mechanical inspection etc checks out, what would be the desirable miles you would prefer on a used 550i? Is less than 50k miles preferable? I see a lot in the 65k miles ballpark with fully loaded features (HUD, Lane departure, Sports transmission with paddle shifters etc.) especially in the 2008 year models. I am assuming age doesn't matter as much as miles.
