How keyless start can get you into trouble...

08 535xit.

Drove to a park with my 1 year old and wife. Got there and asked my wife where the keys are - she said "look for them"

After looking and not finding them anywhere, I go to restart the car: Car doesn't recognize the keys and won't start or power up.

My wife comments: "It's possible I left them on the roof"

I find a very fine set of lines in the dirt on the roof showing something slid backwards off the sunroof.

Turns out the car will start up with the keys sitting on the sunroof.

The keys were recovered but the fob had been driven over and was destroyed.

Bottom line: Don't ever put your keys on the roof

I just tried to start my car with the keys on the roof. It didn't work. Also did not work just holding them outside the passenger compartment.

It will if the sunroof is open, at least mine will.

Interesting....wonder if my battery is stronger? I remember this came up right after I bought my car, so I tried it, and I could definitely start my car with the remote on the roof, behind the opening, if the roof was open. CLosed, no way.

Maybe time to switch out the key fob battery?

Also the CA antennae might be in a different place for those who have done the trunk electronic relo DIY.

I just put a brand new battery in the fob. I'll test it again at work tomorrow and see what happens.

Or a laptop, or a brand new tablet computer, or a macbook pro. yes...I've lost all three off the roof of my car. In all cases I came out smelling like a rose...got so damn lucky.

Tried it again last night. I put the fob just behind the sunroof opening, with the sunroof open, and the car started right up. Closed the roof, nothing.

Still can't get mine to do it, even with a fresh battery. Strange.
