Steering wheel Lock error

I got 2006 used 325xi 79k mile two days back, which was in excellent condition.
y'day evening i saw few errors on my dashboard, initially it started with
1)window washer fluid too low, second time it gave
2) Brake(red color), ABS in yellow with 4x4(yellow) , service engine soon(yellow)
and after few times of trying, i saw an error steering wheel locked up.

In all the above cases my engine was not starting....
Is it due to battery issue??? coz on the very first day i was listening to music with inside light swichted on without switching the engine ON.

Please guide, help me out guys....

Thanks!!!!

The steering wheel lock issue is a known problem on early build e9xs.

A new steering column must be retrofitted and the car coded to remove the ELV system.

Unplugging the ELV and coded the SLZ module to disable the ELV check does not work. You need to flash the module with a newer version that does not contain the ELV system. However, no one knows what ZB number to flash so the dealer is the only option as of right now.

Battery issues can certainly cause the other errors you saw. The battery cable recall was for later models and I dot believe your VIN falls under that recall. A quick call to the dealer will verify that. Make sure you have the last 7 digits of your VIN handy.

Thanks!
But just last week i did a vehicle inspection and it didn't report any problem.
Everything was in excellent condition.

Weird to see it all of a sudden.

I just googled it, and few threads suggest jump start, everything should be fine.

Is there a problem how should we start, ??

Thanks!

When I had to replace the steering column on the 2006 330xi it gave plenty of warning of steering lock in amber color (you can still start the car) until one day it just goes on red and had to be flat bedded and replace the column for $1,200.
Replaced once under warranty and 2nd time around 110k miles.

I did get this when my battery went out AFTER jump start the car. Are you still on the original battery? I would replace the battery first.

2) Brake(red color), ABS in yellow with 4x4(yellow) , service engine soon(yellow)

Battery replacement at BMW dealer or local mechanic is fine ???

HI,
Now the problem taken a U turn.
Y'day i did jump start, and all the warnings gone.
I drove 50miles...
But today morning, again the same problem, guessing battery drianed out...
Does this a signal to change my battery?
If so,
1.Is there a way anybody can check if battery replacement is must?
2.Should i go to dealer to replace battery, if yes, cost?
3. some local shops too can replace battery, is it good to replace at them as it costs less.?

Please let me know...

Thanks!!!

It could be the battery has gone bad and won't hold a charge, or it could be the alternator has gone bad and is not capable of bringing the charge on the battery back up. A good shop can tell you which situation you have, or you can look at the charging system voltage yourself with a VOM while the engine is running to see if the alternator is running to spec.

There's no problem with using a local shop instead of the dealer. Many of us do. If the local shop replaces the battery, the new one must be "registered" with the ECU to allow it to charge it properly. A good local shop should know what you're talking about when you bring the subject up, and a well equipped shop shouild be capable of doing the registration as well. A dealer can certainly do the registration, but, as you note, the costs are higher there.

You can have the battery load tested. Any chain auto parts store provides this service for free.

That's fine. 94r is the battery class I believe but I;m not 100% on that.

Try to get the same specs (Ah and CCA) as your original battery. Keep the same type of battery, AGM vs non-AGM. OEM AGMs are black. Non-AGM are white.

Install it yourself, then have an indy shop register it for you. If you go to the dealer, they will change the hourly rate which is commonly $125-$150 an hour.

It takes less than 5 minutes to register. Take it to an indy and don't pay more than $50 for it. If they charge you more, they don't know what they are doing or are ripping you off.

AAA will replace the battery for $150 then you still need Indy to register the battery (or the battery might not last more than 2 years).
Or get it installed at Walmart and take your chances.

I have heard dissconnecting the IBS might work.

I have heard disconnecting the IBS might work.
Apparently it overrides the jump starts if you have a low battery.
Diy procedure in the DIY section of the following link.

Curious about the IBS and electrics read this

http://www.bawarec.ru/manuals/3er/e9...3er-e90-12.pdf

The battery I got was an Interstate MTP 49/H8

I believe the group 49 batterys are bigger than the 92's

[snip].
/That will set all the lights reported by the OP and I have seen it cause steering column lock warnings. The OP better hope that he hasn't reached his 'time out' limit on the column lock.
The ABS is the #1 standby consumer of current and the motor constantly monitors for sufficient reserve. If the ABS light comes on, and you can't read codes to identify the actual cause, you should consider impending alternator/battery issues as a possible cause.

Yeah I wish I could get a definitive answer on that.

Yeah I wish I could get a definitive answer on that.

I got and error on registering when usining inpa but not one of the
the other sub programs I think it was winkfp using msv70.
I know mine does have a IBS module which would indicate you should.
Its not hyper critical you do it right away as long as you charging voltage
seem reasonable around 14.5 I think.

Registration is a program reset process.

Registration is a program reset process.
It tells the car a new battery is in place and adjusts the charging
rate according to battery age. It should indicate on your bill if this
was done. If not you need to call them and verify this has been done.
If it was done at a BMW dealership they should do it with a battery change.
