E90/E92/E93 M3 (2008 - 2014)
4th generation E90 M3 sedan, E92 M3 coupe and E93 M3 convertible. The last of the naturally aspirated M3s, powered by a 4.0 liter V8 making 414hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

2002 M5 or 2011 M3 vert?

This may sound crazy. I was ready to pick up my 2011 M3 convertible and I saw a 2002 E 39 M5 with remarkably low mileage (20,000) in great condition and about $25k less than the M3. I am now torn as the car is in great condition but out of warranty, etc..

Am I crazy to be considering the M5????

Don't look back go with the M3 which is a superior car to drive compare with E39. Go for the M3.

E39 m5 w 20,000 miles on it? would go with that one. you won't find that around anywhere. it's an amazing car with a massive engine. i love my m3, but for 25k in savings + such low mileage, seems like a no brainer

I loveeee the e39 M5, but honestly they are such different cars it comes down to what you need. It's I'm possible to make a suggestion until we know your priorities.

We have two SUVs with two kids no real need for a sedan and I have never owned a convertible...

Its just that this car with amazingly low mileage and in such great shape is almost too good to pass up.

Totally different cars, sharing only the manufacturer nameplate. Polar opposites as far as room, trunk, rear seat, electronics, etc. I would decide what type of vehicle you want (seats, doors size), then the decision will be easy.

Great way to describe the car. I have an e39 M5, don't own an e92m3 yet, but have an e30 m3, e36 Dinan S3 M3, e46 M3. The M5 is a grand touring car. Luxury meets performance. With that said, its not a agile as a 3 series.

Also, in my opinion, to truly enjoy the e39 M5, it absolutely, positively has to be brought back to factory or better; its extremely hard on suspension components and drivetrain (clutch), time does wear down rubber and bushing components. I've driven a lower mileage M5 and compared to a higher mileage, but fully refreshed M5, the refreshed car feels so much better than the lower mileage car. With that said, be prepared to fork out some money to bring an e39 m5 back to factory standards or better.

If you want to enjoy a piece of legendary BMW motorsport engineering and are willing to spend $$ on maintenance, get the m5. If you want to get in and drive and not worry about maintenance as much (assuming the e92 is under warranty), then get the e92.

If you're not going with a manual transmission, the M5 is way behind the M3 when comparing SMG to DCT as well.

'02 is E39 generation. No SMG offered, just a 6 speed manual You're thinking of E60 gen, which did have a SMG option that left a bit to be desired. I do agree, its no comparison to a DCT...
