Mein Auto: 2011 M3 vert, s4 avant,
2002 M5 or 2011 M3 vert?

This may sound crazy. I was ready to pick up my 2011 M3 convertible, DCT, loaded and I saw a 2002 E 39 M5 with remarkably low mileage (20,000) in great condition and about $25k less than the M3. I am now torn as the car is in great condition but out of warranty, etc..

Am I crazy to be considering the M5????

Probably. And that is from an E39 fan.

Things degrade in time, that car will need suspension, vanos orings and seals, hoses, etc

Having said that, I'd buy ANYTHING before a "vert"..... just me

It seems too good to be true. Even if it is out of warranty if all checks out, consider getting an aftermarket warranty.

I actually spoke to the prior owner, a neurosurgeon, who traded it in for an R8. He expained the whole history as to the low milege. Maded sense and he certainly had no reason to fabricate. I am having BMW do a thorough inspection. The Ferrari/Maserati dealer who has it now and from whom I may purchase it paying for the brake work at BMW - needs new pads and rotors.

2002 M5 or 2011 M3 vert?

This is the weirdest thread I have ever seen, but totally get where you're coming from. I see less potential headaches in the future with the '11 E92.

CPO warranty is a great thing to have.

But now that I think about it, is it ever "crazy" to consider an option that is $25K cheaper? I call that being financially responsible haha

Added weight, wind in my face and hair; low security when parked; having to bring the roof up and down all the time; no roll bar- constantly needing to factor in "no roof, you cannot roll this" when I drive all the time; looks dumb.

How many days a year will you drive with the top down? 3? 8? It isnt socal up there, right?

Anyway, tell the BMW dealer you want a VANOS test performed with a GT1 (or equivalent) as well as a llok at fuel trims and AFRs. And of course any current or stored codes. THIS IS NEVER DONE BY BMW AS PART OF THEIR INSPECTION, unless you insist.

If you are serious on the E39 M5, the worlds best forum isnt here....

Actually, yes. I have a roll bar in the TT, which sees some track time and the most aggressive driving.

If I am driving a car with marginal tires, worn suspension, brakes that are dodgy, I am aware of this as I drive and factor it into the 'equation'. For example I had a corded tire on the TT for a while and acted accordingly.

Driving a car without a roof would cause me to be much more careful.....

Oh, did someone suggest a 'warranty' on a 13-14 year old car??????????

I was talking about how the CPO warranty on the M3 is nice compared to paying out of pocket for everything on the M5.

There are aftermarket warranty offered on 13-14 year old cars. Why not?

If it's your 3rd car, I'd sell your 2nd car and buy the M5 to be the 2nd car, and buy the M3 'vert as your 3rd car.

My E39 M5 is still my first car, because it's just so freakin' awesome. The wife's Audi doesn't compare.

Our 3rd car is a 1999 Z3M-roadster.
