Crank, No Start: Code '4A63 EWS Manipulation'

Folks, this was an odd one. Probably my fault, but it seems to happen to enough people for various reasons that it's worth a thread someone can find in the future. Also, people get sold a new CAS when all they need is a simple software reset.

Symptom is that everything works, engine cranks fine -- but no start (and no SES light). Fire up INPA and you'll see various codes, but the one that's the problem is '4A63 EWS Manipulation'. Means that two modules aren't synched, so the car believes there is a security problem and immobilizes the car.

The fix is easy (with INPA). E60>>Engine>>N52 [in my case]>>Shft F6 EWS -- Start value comparison and Shft F7 EWS CAS -- Start value comparison. In my case, EWS CAS resynched the modules and the car started right up.

NOTE: My INPA had "valve" instead of "value". Since screwing with the valves in INPA is not something you leap into, it took awhile to figure the bad translation. Must have looked that this five times wondering what valves has to do with the EWS....

NOTE: Different engines have this selection in different submenus, I'm told. I didn't confirm this.

and NOTE: This can be caused by multiple issues with keys, but also by newbies getting too random while learning INPA. Probably what happened to me. I learned a lot while I diagnosed it, testing fuel pump ops and so on. Also, tried several Web suggestions (insert key in door twist left and right; or use valet key), and neither fixed anything.

So, if you get a "crank, no start", check for this fast fix via INPA. Good luck.

Don't know (of course), but in my search for the code I came across those who claimed it was out of the blue. Usually had something to do with getting new keys, thus requiring new key coding on a control unit in the car.

One more thing: there's no SES light. So, crank, no start, no SES light seems fairly unique. Even a bad fuel pump would likely trigger an SES light.

More likely a starter motor or relay problem, without having codes or other data. Get a BMW code reader -- Carly is good.

the car started up as soon as the tow truck driver showed up. I drove it to an Indy where they shut it off and it would not start again. They checked the ivm and it was good. The mech said it was my starter ($550.00) and the labor was another $500.00. I ran out of there after they jump started my car. It didn't make it halfway down the block and almost turned off before I got it back to the shop. It turns out when my other Indy replaced the clutch they messed up an engine ground wire. They replaced it and wala... Car is working perfectly fine. Over 30 or so starts.

Helped me.... Was panicking :rofl: Was on the way to work in the morning... and nothing happened. The car acts like everything is normal, cranks, lights everything up but no start.
In german hit F2 CAS-Startwert zurĂĽcksetzen under engine settings. Everything got back to normal. I had a glow plug blown but couldn't believe that was the cause it couldn't start.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Glad to hear it. Had a report of a less-than-scrupulous (or perhaps less-than-knowledgeable) mechanic claiming a bad EWS on this failure. It's certainly an odd item, only solvable with a code reader and a program like INPA.

Even though this thread is from a year ago, I too have been having ews problems. Cranks but no start. However it's a early gen e70 x5 production date is feb 2017. My problem is, I have a k+dcan connector with the switch, how do I know if it's 7 or 8 pin? I don't wanna plug it in, "code" it under the wrong switch setting, and brick the car completely.. haalp - noob with inpa ***x1f642;

Just signed up to say thanks, this thread saved me an unpleasant evening :)

Got back into the car after doing some shopping in Tesco and it turned over but wouldn't start exactly as described above. Pulled a bunch of fuses and sprayed diesel around to confirm it was getting fuel, then noticed the '4A63 EWS Manipulation' error code in INPA, Googled and found this thread.

E60 530d, the option in INPA to fix the problem was something like 'CAS-Startwert zurĂĽcksetzen', then 'Reset'.

Cheers

Hi all, i know this discussion is old but i was wondering if any of you could help ??

2009 R55 Mini Clubman 1.6 D has thrown a fault code 4A63, reading the above for old guy like me seems rather daunting so is there any way someone could explain in simple steps how to obtain INPA and carry out the procedure ??

Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks. My starter died in an ASDA car park, had to have my E92 330d recovered home where I replaced the starter and recharged the battery. When I tried to start the car after the job was done it would crank but wouldn't start...

Thinking I've left something unplugged I started to rip everything apart again and just as I was doing that I came across this post...

Luckily I had INPA to hand - after doing the reset the car started first time.

Cheers (y)

Try a typical code reader (OBD II Reader) to confirm whether you can communicate with the ECU from the OBD port. If so, you may have a number of alternative problems with INPA. But check the ECU is working.
