Lightbulb Newest competitor: Mercedes CLA 250 test drive

I had been waiting for the new Mercedes CLA 250 and was it worth the wait - YES !'

Drove 45 miles to Newport Beach and got to test drive it. There were so many people wanting to take a look and test drive it.

Can you believe there was a line of people to test drive it ? If you didn't have a reservation, you would have to wait until a no show.

People driving as far as San Diego even came up to test drive it. Luckily I had an appointment so I only waited half an hour. Others have been there all day waiting for a no show.

Comparing between a 328i or 320i to this CLA 250 is a definite must before you buy!

I know this is a BMW forum but you have to know that Mercedes will definitely steal some business from first timers as well as disgruntled past BMW drivers. Starting at $29,990, this car the one to watch out for and F30 buyers...

The test drive was short of amazing - electronic steering that actually had a feel of the road, stiffened up on highway speeds plus the suspension that was taut and had a good connection to road was a plus.

The seats are amazing - felt as if every inch of your back was covered - no gaps, no feeling of emptiness, hugged your body like a comfy office chair, and the side bolsters did not remind me that I am getting overweight.

Engine was silky smooth and super quiet.

Eco and Sport modes kept the engine & tranny shifting at different RPMs.

Super solid - no body flex or twist. Very solid ride.

No rattles or noises which surprised me. It's quieter than me E90.

Huge trunk, folding rear seats, and frameless windowed doors made it like a 3 GT almost!

And best part: fully loaded still came to just under 40K.

If this keeps up, BMW better worry because the drive excitement factor is going up for an entry level Merc!

This is the color car I test drove - almost fully loaded at $36K:

I don´t think that the CLA is really worth to take a look on it. The car is much too small inside and out, the car is absolutely "overpriced" and most important: There is nothing that the CLA can do better than a 3er. Did you try to take a seat in the rear? Probably not otherwise you would know that it is impossible to find a comfortable position there, only childs can sit there. The A 250 or the A 45 AMG might be worth to take a look on it, but definitely not the CLA.

Interesting and slightly gushing review. In reality the CLA is not a direct competitor to the 3 series. Mercedes has the C series that fills this role. The A series being FWD is a bit of a different animal and certainly less of a family sedan due to the sloping roofline.

What makes you say that? Personally I am not interested in the CLA but I wouldn't dismiss is just yet. The CLA45 AMG absolutely blows the competition away.

The CLA was what I was originally was waiting for until my friend took me to a BMW dealer to test drive the 320i. I fell in love with the 320i but havent test drove the CLA. How does the front wheel drive of the CLA compare to a RWD BMW? You would think that there would be no comparison but I have heard a lot of people cannot tell the difference.

i took a look at the CLA yesterday and its simply too small. Because of the shape, it seems the roof is tapered in ways that dont work for me. While I didnt sit in it, I suspect I am too big for the car in the same way I felt cramped in the new IS350. Additionally, i thnk the front headlights are far too big, giving the front end odd proportions. That being said, in black/sport its extremely sharp. They will sell like hotcakes.

I was very interested in checking out the AMG version, but unfortunately the timing wasn't quite right for me so I ended up ordering a 335i. I think the CLA / A-class is more of a 1-series competitor, honestly.

Based on the C&D review of the CLA45, it's encouraging that MB is getting more sporty (with the AMG models at least). More competition is always a good thing.

But the CLA 45 is going to be a 4 cylinder. A 4 cylinder AMG?!?!

ummmmm. why the F is there a Merc review on a BMW F30 enthusiast forum. sounds like the OP did everything but give the Merc a BJ.

also as seen above, the CLA doesn't compete with the F30, not even the 320i.

There is so much more I want to say but no... just no. a CLA dude seriously?

lol I love you guys....

Bimmerfest - Forums;F30: Enthusiasts forum. AKA the only enthusiasts forum that exists where you'll get shunned and bashed for actually being a enthusiast.

Funnisest **** in the world? The same thread starter that sates their F30 doesn't handle like a E92 M3(exaggerating, but you get the point). will start another thread complaining they cant send an address via google to their iDrive. That pic you posted would fit nicely in just about every F30 "steering" thread.

I would not dismiss any car because is is FWD until I drove it. RWD is not necessarily inherently better than FED. There are some excellent handling FWD cars available (Mini, Mazda 3 for example).

Indeed! Daimler AG's competitor to the F30 is W204 C-Class. In the U.S., Volkswagen Jetta GLI is the car that arguably comes closest to CLA-Class in terms of size, chassis, powertrain, and market positioning.

While i am personally not interested in this A Class remade into a sedan for US, i do enjoy and appreciate reading reviews and comparisons of all makes and models.
Otherwise, a forum becomes a circle jerk of guys in love with their car and their head in the sand

Right.. matter of fact I think the CLA is a cry for help from MB. trying to broaden their line as BMW is doing epically well. Problem is they've created a car which has no competition b/c there's no market for a sedan THAT small at that price. its impractical and most likely much to expensive to compete with cars in its size group. The CLA may sell a few based solely on base price for those who want the MB badge. beyond that it will flop in the states, exactly as a 128i sedan would....IMO

128 sedan would certainly fail. probably similar to how e46 and e90 failed.

The MB CLA is what the F30 320i was aimed at, as a competitor, along with the Audi A3--a huge entry-level market outside the U.S. The CLA was not expected to compete with the F30 328i. Driving enthusiasts, like me, will be put off that the CLA is only available with AT, not a manual six, a big fun deficit. And once you add AMG to the equation, you're talking M car pricing.

What is interesting here is that with all of the opinions in this thread the OP is apparently the only poster who has actually driven a CLA.

I'll reserve my opinion until I at least see (let alone drive) one.

They will also come in AWD configuration. AMGs are all AWD.

Also, in all versions, the automatic is actually a DSG/DCT type transmission, not a regular automatic. Big difference, IMO, even though it doesn't have a 3rd pedal.
