Early 3-series Door Lock Failures

I've been harping on this defect for a long time, urging owner's to report problems to the NHTSA. Current NHTSA database complaints indicate numerous people being trapped in their cars having to escape from the windows. This report is more disturbing:

BMW, of course, is "shocked and saddened by this tragedy" although they've known of the 3-series door lock defect for years.

Y'know, should be a way out like the inside trunk latch - everything electric fails sooner or later. But there's risk - thieves with, what, a coat hanger?

Surely something could be figured out! Squeaky wheel gets grease.

NHTSA works in strange ways. Their mission is strictly "safety" but their priorities are sometimes hard to figure out.

Recently, only four braking complaints from late-model 328i consumers on their web site "complaint" database resulted in a full blown investigation from their Office of Defect Investigations (ODI).

In the meantime, there are dozens of complaints from early 3-series owner's on NHTSA's web site complaining about being trapped in their cars from 'door lock' failures. This would "seem" to be an obvious safety issue.

The recent incident and death may confirm this.

BMW will be required to report this death to the NHTSA "Early Warning" reporting database where NHTSA will match it up with "ongoing" consumer complaints.

I'm curious if this will finally result in a NHTSA investigation of door lock defects.
