2008 335i going on three weeks in the shop......

Hello fans,

The problem: under heavy acceleration the car hesitates slightly, almost like a pulse or a hair miss. It is constant when you are on it, not flooring it but close. It is Dinan stage 2 software.

The solution: take it to the shop.... No luck so far going on three weeks. No codes came up. The mechanics agreed there is a problem. They first tried replacing the fuel pump with no luck. Then, reflashed firmware, no luck. I asked them about vacuum leaks or wastegate issues and they said it would pull codes. They are getting ready to replace the ecu....

Ideas??

Otherwise known as a "walnut shell blast." Similar to sand blasting, but walnut shells are used. These engines are inclined to build up gunk due to their design, and this cleans them up. The general wisdom is it needs to be done around 50,000 miles.

+2. The walnut shell blast on my car (at 100k miles) eliminated a very noticeable stammer during mid-range acceleration.

40K and talk of a walnut blast service, here. So why has BMW not come up with this idea with OPs car, moreover if such a pervasive problem why has not BMW included it on a service interval basis?

I only ask these questions because the problem of build up seems real enough as I read many complaints online but not recognized by BMW service as an issue that warrants service interval attention.

How and where do you start looking to see what shops do this, and what has been the average cost? I'm at 92,000 miles and am experiencing the same. I wonder if the dealer would cover this under the CPO and maintenance plan.

Good luck with that.

The issue generally starts to rear its ugly head around 50k, which, gee, is the end of BMWs "free" maintenance. I hate to see what the V-8s look like with direct injection.

The chances that the dealer will cover it are pretty low. You can try, but don't hold your breath.

I had mine done at just about 100k miles. All the local dealers (Boston area) wanted between $850 and $950. I found a BMW specialty independent who did it using the BMW tools for $495.

FWIW,
George

Well, so what if that is the problem but they can't officially find the problem but know that there is indeed a problem?? It is covered under my extended warranty...
Do they just start replacing engines and what not??

All you have right now is a mechanic saying he thinks there's a problem. No codes, no obvious failing parts. At some point, someone will want to say "They all do that."

And, based on the valve coking issues seen to date, they all do. BMW doesn't want to get on the hook for fixing every carbon-bound valve set that isn't throwing codes. They'll get hosed under the 50k warranty, let alone the CPO and extended sets.

But, costs you nothing to ask if they'll cover it.

Carbon fouling with the symptoms you are describing rarely throws a code. Good luck.

No idea if it's carbon fouling or not. But there are no codes thrown. They replaced the ecu today, waiting on results. Will update when I here.

Ok, so they didn't replace the computer, they automatically jumped to carbon cleaning.... After I suggested it. So, it is a 2008... It has had the following done.

Wastegate not replaced, but covered.
2010 and 2013 HPFP replaced.
2011 injector reprogramming
2011 and 2013 Dinan stage 2 software

I talked to BMW NA and they specifically told me that, "with the following extended warranties including the wastegates not preventing build up,"........ It should very well be covered.

So, I'm on a mission. Find one person that has had some or all of the problems I have had and have them cover the carbon cleaning.

Waiting on my sd to call me

It never hurts to ask. I asked them if they would help me out and reduce the cost of the service. The obliged and reduced it from $1000 to $600. YMMV.

To the OP, my 2008 335i currently has 61,000 miles. Dealership walnut blasted my intake valves at 45,000 miles and covered it under warranty. However, it took 3 visits with the same complaint before they agreed to do it. I mentioned the hesitation issue and asked if it could be related to carbon building during my first visit. They found "no carbon build-up" during the first and second visits but finally agreed to do a walnut blast during the third visit -- I assume they never actually checked anything the first two times. SA told me it was the first walnut blast that the dealership had done (April 2012) and he said the carbon build-up was very noticeable. The hesitation issue was resolved and the car pulled like new again. Note that they never found any codes thrown. As reference, the hesitation that I experienced was usually in 4th-6th gear (manual) on the highway while under load, between 2,000-3,000 RPM.

You should also consider replacing all six spark plugs with OEM if that hasn't been done already. BMW recommends every 45,000 miles but Mike Miller (tech writer for Roundel) recommends doing it closer to 30,000 miles. BMW replaced all 6 under warranty at 28,000 miles while attempting to fix what ended up being the HPFP issue. I replaced all 6 plugs again at 58,000 miles and it partially resolved a new hesitation issue that I experienced around 2,500 RPM in all gears while the engine is under load. Since they already walnut blasted at 45k, I ruled it out this time around.

Unfortunately, the hesitation problem returned and I wound up with a service engine soon light and rough cold starts with misfires. Dealership finally determined it was faulty fuel injectors. No codes thrown other than the misfires. I had them replace all 6 injectors at my cost, although they gave me a discount. BMW previously replaced all 6 injectors under warranty at 28,000 miles.

While the OP's issue is most likley carbon build-up, he should also consider spark plugs and fuel injectors. The N54 engine can be a mysterious beast.
