2014 X3 35i turbo whistle

About 9k on my 35i, heard a whistling sound on moderate acceleration and deceleration between 2-3k RPMs. When I drove with the radio off I hear it consistently. Anyone else notice this? Asked BMW and they said it was normal and no need to bring the car in.

Totally normal for a turbo to whistle. Get next to a semi at a stop light. When he acccelerates you will hear the same whistle.

Thank you. I find it odd that the high pitch whistle is not always consistently present. I notice there have been other BMW blogs with this particular engine and different cars such as 335 with similar concerns.

No whistle on our 2011. Sounds like an air leak.

It's not consistently present because you are not consistently hitting boost, turbo car credentials= single turbo 97' supra 700rwhp done by cars v2 of Wilmington de, 1990 300zx twin turbo done by Jim wolf technologies, 2000 7.3l f250, blah blah. It's normal. Turgid making boost produce that sound. If it was an air leak your car would be throwing a code for sure

Thanks. Sounds like you're an experienced turbo guy. I expected a growl not a whistle...same RPMs doesn't produce the whistle, perhaps the "boost" comes with a certain level go acceleration.
