I have a Blackberry z10 and when i am connected to the cars bluetooth, "Voice Control" shows up as one of my contacts. When I dial it with the idrive it connects to the phones voice control and I can search the internet, send text, email.... So I saved it to one of the radio presets. It only shows up when I am connected to the cars bluetooth so I thought it was a BMW feature but maybe its a Blackberry feature?

Just did some research and I think this feature works for Android and Blackberry but not iOS.

I have a 2014 n I believe BMW apps and connected drive are standard. I have android and receive text messages but no email. Need a nuance subscription if u want to use the car to respond back to text messages. BMW online also works with android n I can get weather news location and also 3D view via Google maps.

I have a 2013 and iOS 7.02. I get texts after I've connected the phone but no emails. I could get texts and even get them to be read out from my iPhone 5 even before the iOS 7 upgrade.

Here is my uneducated guess...

In the latest ""UPD05011" firmware update for iDrive, I believe it has the programming for SIRI streering wheel button function.

The problem is that FY14 vehicles get code and FY13 are excluded.

With the new UPD05011 update:

FY14 vehicles will have software level= TN-1.37.1 -SIRI YES

FY13 vehicles will have a software level= TN-1.23.10 -SIRI NO

I have it connected through the USB cable, BUT texts should show even if you're connected through bluetooth. That's all it takes. Please note the texts MUST come to the phone after you have connected to the car. The texts in the memory of the phone do not show.

When I had a Galaxy SII even the emails showed which was cool.

@kk22. I figured it out on your actual phone under Bluetooth and choosing the BMW Bluetooth if you click on the BMW Bluetooth there is an option to show notifications. This needs to be turned on in order for text to show on idrive using iPhone with ios7

MY2013 with NBT (pre-LCI) is running firmware ver 2.xx. No SIRI. LCI model is using NBT too so I had high hope that this feature might be available to all NBT unit.

Regardless of year or lack/presence of Idrive, if you can use your Siri-capable iphone as a phone over Bluetooth, you can use Siri with the phone in your pocket. Do a long press of the steering wheel phone button. If Siri answers, you're set. If not, go to Amazon and search for Mobile Home. This $60 device clips to your visor. Press its button and Siri is invoked and you speak/listen to her over Bluetooth hands free. Obviously, nothing is showing up on your Nav screen (if you have one), but the idea here is to keep your eyes on the road. Have Siri read your texts. Don't be reading your screen. Please.

What's the big deal about reading a short message if the road conditions permit? It is limited so the message can't be that long. If it is longer than the allotted amount you can click play so the message is read to you.

Before heads up display on my current car, it would take much longer to go through a couple menus to change the radio station on the old idrive.

I don't consider myself a "speed reader" but it barely takes two seconds to push a preset button, glance back at the road while pressing down on the controller and then glance back at the screen to read the message.

Which is the entire point.

What's with guys like you who have such hatred for Apple and its users? Chip on shoulder much?

Because they suck. People keep using them because they think iphones cool. They arent and they are years behind what everyone else is usibf. Dont get caught with the next "blackberry". If you have an adroid phone. Pair it and press and hold the hands free button... done

It's just funny to me how much those who verbatim have the sentiment you do HATE Apple. Like HATE, so much. It shows how much Apple is doing right.

I have the overhyped/overmarketed Galaxy S3 and it's the worst experience with a phone I've ever had, and I find Android a big upset. Don't even get me into how fluidly my Brothers iPhone 4 works in my BMW and old Mercedes' and how poorly my Android does. Nothing is better mated to a Bimmer or Benz for that matter than an iPhone, especially with Apple going full Siri-partnership now with them.

The second Apple gives my eyes which are acclimated to a larger screen a larger screen iPhone, I'm done with Android and not looking back.

Re: Siri Hands-free on 2014 - anyone using it?

Ok. To each his own.

I had an iphone and kept it for 4 hours....4 hours.... it took only 4 hours for me to be fed up with it. And I was coming from a blackberry... that says a lot.

The s3 was an amazing phone though. I had it before I moved to the s4. Should have kept it. Outside of the better feel in hand/ergonomics and larger screen. There is not a huge difference vbetween them. If I were you, id think twice about jumping back into the apple flock.

For the record, I do hate apple stuff. Its outdated, restrictive, limited functionality, and has a condescending interface. Perfect for moms, grandparents, babies, and morons. 5 generations and still no removable battery, external storage, side-loading, standard micro usb, and on and.... why?

Why would you knowingly pay for something that is less capable that most phones on the market? Just to say "I have an iphoneX^2" . If your bmw was less reliable and performed worse tgat a corolla, woukd you have bought it anyway.. just to say "I have a bmw"

Wake up. You have one of the best phones on the market. Stop crying. Learn to use it. Google Now blows Siri out of the water.

So with that point of view, isn't the entire idrive system a huge distraction? Yet, I don't recall BMW being sued over this. And in fact a ton of other companies followed suit.

I believe reading something on the large display that still allows you to view the road is a much better alternative to taking your phone out of your pocket.

And as I mentioned, this is with road conditions permitting.

Also still asking, any chance activating siri from the steering wheel can be coded? Or is the coding separate from the Bluetooth updates? Holding down the home button while my phone is in my pocket obviously isn't a terrible alternative.

Speaking of which - android phones (like my SGS2) also have voice recognition, so I'd think that if coding can activate the long-press Siri communication, why wouldn't it communicate with a Samsung, as well?

For some reasons I always have 2 phones on me (iPhone 5 and SGS2), but neither offers dictating SMS or emails with my pre-LCI F10. This is why it'd be nice to have the functionality working with at least one of my phones!

I don't see why it could not be coded that way. i have not gotten my mitts on a 2014 car with idrive, but i'm sure it can be done via obdII and a ncsexpert. i would just need time with the system. is it not in the settings already?
