RWS: Important Special Announcement

I believe that I have solved the saga of the RWS.

As a starting point, RWS stands for rear window shelf (not rear wood shelf). The rear window shelf is an assembly composed of a variety of parts, including the trim that is installed behind the rear seats.

As we all know, the BMW Seven Series cars have a piece of wood trim, which is installed behind the rear seats.

For some unknown reason, however, BMW does not install the wood trim behind the rear seats of its Seven Series cars when the fine line wood trim is selected.

While I have not discovered why BMW fails to provide the wood trim in connection with the initial manufacturing process, I have discovered that you can purchase the fine line wood trim from BMW and have it installed by your dealer.

Last week, I contacted my dealer and told him that, while I love the Seven I ordered that has the high gloss fine line wood trim, I am nevertheless disappointed that the trim behind the seats is missing because it clearly looks like something is missing.

Late on Friday, my CA contacted me and said that BMW has this part (high gloss fine line trim that goes behind the rear seats) and that he ordered the part, which is now in the process of being delivered to my dealer (it is coming from Germany). My CA did warn me that he will not be 100% sure that the part matches until it arrives, but it does exist on paper in BMW's inventory of parts.

Following this conversation, I did some research of my own. On the website for BMW of South Atlanta (I have the link), there is a listing for the RWS - rear window shelf, retrofit, fine line high gloss. This tells me that BMW does not install the trim during the initial manufacturing process, but the part is nevertheless available for purchase from BMW for purposes of installing it once the car is here in the United States.

As I said above, I have not found out the reason for this oddity in the BMW manufacturing process.

However, I have found out that there is a solution to this oddity in the BMW manufacturing process.

In short, Rajeek's Kia Club is soon to become extinct because all of those owners of BMW Sevens without the wood trim behind their rear seats will be able to purchase the part and have it installed thus forever ending the embarrassment & shame that they are currently enduring.

CAVEAT: My wood trim has been ordered, but will not arrive until around this Wednesday. Once it comes in, it must be inspected to verify that it matches. Then it has to be correctly installed. Until such time as the wood trim arrives and has been installed to my satisfaction (I am a tough critic), I can not say as a matter of 100% certainty that the saga of the RWS has been resolved (but is seems to have been).

Once you confirm everything is good and have the RWS installed, can you please share part numbers and pictures of the part(s). Thanks.

Yes, of course. I would like to thank everyone on the Seven Forum for welcoming me with open arms. The members have been very helpful in providing me with information and it will be a pleasure to be able to contribute & provide this information in return.

This seems very promising. Are you having to pay for it or is your dealer installing it as a courtesy for giving you a Lemon without it?

Although not expressly discussed, I believe that my dealer is paying for this, not me. As my CA explained it, he went to management, showed them that all of the other Sevens on their lot had the trim, and explained that mine did not. Perhaps they will charge it back to BMW as a warranty item (I am just speculating).

Can to have your SA give you all the part numbers also if this works. That will make it much easier for the rest of us to pursue this ultimate mod.

Ghost Protocol, welcome home my friend. You have made us all proud and you are welcome in our home anytime.

Raj, it's gonna be heart breaking if you boot your Kia girls to the curb.

Thank you. As I said above, I am glad to be able to contribute. Let's all hope that this retrofit works.

Here is a link to the BMW of South Atlanta website. Check it out and let me know if you agree that its says what I think it says.

This is odd. I can read Richard's post on my iPhone, but not my iPad. Is Richard's post visible to everyone else?

Thanks Ghost...you just saved me a whole lot of dough (read below)...and great write up too!

Raj, I know I just joined the No RWS (Kia) club, but I have already sent my club dues in advance (check is in the mail..lol)...and since I planned on having the vehicle for at least 4 years, I sent you a huge $12K check ($250.00 x 48 months). I think I would rather you wire the money back into my account, I don't take checks in return. Patiently waiting...

In reviewing the RWS Club bi-laws, unless the RWS is installed by a trained BMW assembly line engineer at the factory, retrofitting does not count toward membership. I'm sorry to have to be the one to burst your bubble, but rules are rules...........

However, there is a double secret by-law that states, if you have not yet accepted delivery of your Seven and if you use authentic BMW parts imported directly from Germany and if you use a mechanic who has been expertly trained to service the BMW product, you are Grandfathered in and are admitted to membership in the BMW Seven Club.

It still begs the question why BMW leaves it out of fineline models...? Intriguing and good find on the retrofit though!!

Do the Rear Window Shelf wood trims cost different amounts at dealer parts departments?

If so, does the High Gloss Fine Line piece cost more?

I have discovered one complication. It seems to me that you have to buy a whole series of parts to do the retrofit. I am not so much concerned about the cost. Rather, I am more concerned about the scope of the work. It looks like everything has to be taken apart behind the rear seats and multiple parts have to be swapped (including the rear window shelf itself) in order to accommodate the trim. Unless somebody who is really good and talented does this work, it could prove disastrous. I am waiting to see what parts come in from Germany and what work has to be done before I make my final decision.

All kidding aside regarding the RWS debate, I don't know if I'd take the risk of having the rear shelf area taken apart and gamble with potential of squeaks and rattles months later. It's just a piece of wood that no one but the OCD members of this forum would even notice or care about.

Some of the guys on here figured it out a while ago. The conclusion they came to by looking at international configurators for the 7 was that fineline matte/gloss were base level woods, where the other woods usually incurred an option cost. I guess this additional cost included the rear wood shelf. In the US they don't charge extra for the non-individual woods, but you still don't get a shelf since the base woods aren't spec'd for it.

When I picked up my most recent 7 the sales guy must have thought i was a weirdo when he saw me snooping around the back seats of prospective 7's to see if they had wood shelves. Pretty much every single 7 in their garage had dark ash wood
