Yes, it's a dealer only thing. They'll have to use your VIN to order some new keys, and they won't be as cheap as you'd like. You'll also need to provide them with proof of ownership of the car (i.e. vehicle title, in your name).

It will come precut and preprogrammed for you car. When they built the car BMW made 10 copies of the key set. They shipped two with the car and held the other 8. When you order a spare the pull from the spare set.

I checked into this a while back because I only have one key. My key is not chipped/electronic (except for a flashlight that doesn't work). I don't remember the exact price, but I remember being surprised at how reasonable it was compared to expectations. Mine is a 94, I'm not sure when they started chipping the keys, but I'm sure the chipped ones are a lot higher.

I believe late '95 is when EWS II was implemented.

True, Don. Bebe is a very early '95 (9/94) and does not have EWS II. No chip in the key. I believe the EWS II/chipped keys came about in early calendar year 1995 (still '95 M/Y, but built 3/95 to 8/95, before the '96 M/Y). Dates could be wrong...that's only a guess.

Matt, the unchipped key with no flashlight is about $55 from the dealer. YCMV.

Pesky EWS..

IIRC...

93: Drive Away Protection (pre EWS)

94: EWS I (disabled from factory.. but can be activated with OBC)

95: EWS II

96: EWS III

98: EWS III D on Z3 (E36/7)

I received four keys at delivery: a lighted master key, an unlighted one, a valet key and a plastic emergency key.

^ That would be the complete key set you receive when it is NEW.

Plastic key gets put in the wallet, or taped behind a body panel in case you lock your keys in your car..
Valet key is for.. Valets..
Unlighted key for daytime..
Lighted key for nighttime..

Voila!

Check the ACE Hardware stores in your area. Some ACE stores have a chip key center and can make a copy of a chipped key. They generally charge less than the dealer.

Only got one key when I bought my 94 325i and tried a number of ACE stores with no luck. Then one day I saw the service truck of our local locksmith who I had completely forgotten about. 30 bucks later I had my spare key from here in a small town pop. 9000 ! If not chipped look for a good old time locksmith.

It's typically the higher volume ACE stores that will have the set up to cut and program a BMW key. I was fortunate that there's one about 2 miles from me.

Good luck for you dc, I tried some high volume Ace stores in Northern Il and you would think I was asking for a key to the Space Shuttle

Any idea what the complete 4 key set costs from the dealer?

If you have the spare key, I wouldn't see why you couldn't get another key cut?

Don't mind me, if I'm incorrect.

Would be a rip off to get one cut from the BMW dealership.

It's not so much getting the blank cut as it is getting the chip coded so that it will sync up with your DME and allow the car to start if your car has EWSII.

Just got my spare key from the BMW dealer for $74 buck. I didn't know that for the last four month since I brought the car I was driving around with the spare key. Couldn't figure why the passenger side door would not work or the trunk. Now the new key open up both door along with the gas cap. Best buy for the buck.
