Mtech 318ti: M42 or M44?

My dad picked up a 318ti Mtech. Production year is 95, date is 10/95. When I ran the VIN it said M42. However it has the plastic oil filler cap, which I thought was a M44 thing. Real OEM says this year and production date could have either motor. Any ideas on how to tell them apart?

New to the whole 4 cylinder BMW thing, but I love this car. I'm selling the 328i and driving this soon. Just so simple, I can't get enough. No cruise control, no stupid dual climate control or digital climate control, no OBC, manual non heated seats.... love it so much. And it's got a LSD in it and M trim, with stock billies.

Uhhh..........no. It's on the front, pointed at the toothed timing ring behind the harmonic balancer, passenger's side of the engine. The M44 had the crank sensor on the bellhousing, pointed at the flywheel
