Thinking About Selling My 2003 530i...As Is!

Hello Bimmerfest community,

I have a black 530i with about 177k miles on it...mainly freeway miles (well kept & serviced by a dealership and trusted independents). Something has drained the battery so it doesn't run at the moment.

I have alot going on right now so I'm thinking about just dropping a new battery in and selling it as is.......how much do you think I can get for it?

Thanks,

Tee

Welcome to Bimmerfest! I've moved your thread over to the E39 forum so you can get a better sense of what your car is worth from other 5er owners.

depends on alot of things.
I think you can get at least 5k.Dont take less. 6k if the miles were 130ish if its dealer maintained etc etc.
Battery drain can be anything. check the trunk light wires and hood light wires.Theres also sunvisor lights, back seat lights, broken door pin thats not shutting the lights off .

That should cover your bases. or you have aftermarlet radio crap?

Check Craigslist for pricing comparisons. Without seeing your car it's tough to say but there's an issue with it that will prevent someone from using it as their daily driver until its fixed. I'd say it's a $2k car and then go up from there based on condition, records, paint & body condition, etc.

Sport pkg? Manual or automatic? All windows and sunroof work? No pixel issues with display? Nav system? All scheduled maintenance performed on time with supporting paperwork? Clean title? These are all things that go in to the value of a car.

Let me clarify my statement on $2k... that's base price for a 530i with 177k and an electrical issue. If the car is otherwise mint and all maintenance up to date, it's worth more. If its "just an easy fix", then you fix it and you can sell it for more. If its going to take a shop $1k to trace the problem and fix it, then it's not an easy fix.

The less risk to the buyer, the more you can ask.

I just paid north of $15k for my E39, with 120k miles. And it's not perfect - so if your car has desirable options and condition and color combo, you might get a bunch for it. That said, there's a bunch of E39's on Craigslist now for under $6k.

I bartered a Jeep I was trying to sell for $2g's for my '99 528 with 150K miles and LOADS of stupid problems like that. Battery drain (turned out to be a stupid aftermarket amp the PO installed), both back windows were inop, sunroof inop, shifter was super sloppy, suspension pieces front and back were bad, etc. I've put about $3G's into mine (I just put on the second set of tires at $800 a set) to bring it to about what we think it should be worth ($4-5G). Basically I'd agree with the $2G starting price then add up your positives about the car to bring the price up.

Re: Thinking About Selling My 2003 530i...As Is!

California prices are different than wherever the rest of you guys are. E39s are all over place, they're like Accords here. 5000 for a high mileage E39 with an unknown electrical drain is totally unrealistic.

OP, if you're in Nor Cal I may be interested in taking it on as a project for the right price if you're looking for a solid buyer who won't waste your time. PM me if you're interested.

Posted it on Craigslist. Trying to sell an e39 to people with an e39 is a hard sell unless the car is truly special. Forums always try to push values down because there is that "buyer" that scored a ridictulous deal therefore all cars must be "$2k" else you are getting ripped off. I agree with the $4-6k bracket. Anymore e28s with mild rust, failing paint, and creased/split seats hit $3k for a big-6 and manual transmission.

I'd still consider fixing it. The "it only has a small easy/cheap to fix problem!" on a sales ad is a red flag. If it was a simple cheap fix, why didnt the seller just fix it?

I think any money you invest in fixing the electrical issue should be recouped and more in resale price.

I don't know if it is a "cheap to fix" problem which is why I started this thread to see what type of responses I would get.... re: sell as is.

I'm want to move to Hawaii and would prefer to just sell the car as is.......IF I CAN!

See - you as the OWNER don't even know if the problem will be cheap or expensive to fix. A potential buyer will have to assume its expensive to fix and thus reduce the value of the car accordingly. If the fix were cheap, the car's value wouldn't be affected much.

How long did it sit not driven until the battery drained? If I do not drive mine in a month like over the winter mine will drain. I just keep a battery maintainer on it over the winter.
May not be a problem at all or maybe just a bad battery.

I went a few days to approx a week without driving it. There were no indications that the battery was going bad....I'm just glad it died while in my driveway vs out of town somewhere. I used to leave it at the airport for weeks when I traveled and it would start without problems upon my return. That was a while ago...and the battery is old. It may be just a bad battery. I just wanted there to be full disclosure in case someone was interested in buying the car.

You can get the battery tested for a bad cell for free at places like Advanced Auto. Is there any danger in doing that on an E39 compared to "regular" cars?

Update.....I put in a new battery a few days ago and solved the problem. I'm still looking to sell the car as is...don't want to give it away but don't want to spend alot or time or money on this either. I do plan on buying another beemer when I return from my extended travel.

Anyone hearing good things about the newer 5-series?....2010 to2013
