I Love To Hate My Car

Hi, maybe you all can help me keep my head from exploding. This is my first and last BMW. I had gone this route by already owning a Pontiac GTP, an Infiniti G35 and a Lexus is350. I decided to trade in the Lexus after 9 years, the longest I've ever had a car for this used 2008 335i with 50,000 miles. The car is certified from the dealer so I decided to buy my "new"used car. I want to say it was the worst decision I have EVER made. To this day this is my service list:
$1044.39 front and back brakes 9/27/13
$355.47 vacuum hoses 12/07/12
$260.67 tire/ seat belt retractor 11/09/12
$50.00 deductible for tire 10/021/12
$220.48 battery 07/23/13
$50.00 deducible for tire 07/13/13
$695.56 dry rotted tire 07/01/13
$194.56 filters oil 08/10/12
$2700.00 clutch replacement 03/16/12

Just took it to the dealer because there is a knocking sound and a break light malfunction
quoted over 2 grand for suspension and wiring that melted in the brake light, I have not done the work yet.
The dealership thinks it's a joke to see me and say "AGAIN?"

I think it's nuts to pay a dealership for service. Find an indy. Try using this page to start locating some shops...

http://www.bimrs.org/2008MapPage.html

I say indy not just because they are cheaper, but because I believe them to do higher quality work.

Some of those things seem awfully expensive.

Brake light on my car takes 5 seconds to completely swap out the entire assembly. Pull plug, depress lever and it pops right out. About a $15 part I believe for the entire outer assembly, the inner one not sure but probably less as it's smaller. That one is more like a 15 minute job, mostly just to pull those 10 or so clips out that hold the liner to the trunk lid.

One tire cost $700? If all 4, that's just what tires cost, and after 5+ years, they were probably due depending on your miles and maintenance.

Anyway, sorry it's been such a disaster for you. But from here forth, I'd try an indy.

I have the extended warranty on the tires but does not cover dry rot which is what they said happened to the tire, I will have the car two years March. the brake service was from an indy.

Evil Previous Owner didn't know what he was doing.

The clutch on the car I learned to drive stick on lasted 90K, and the failure was an internal clutch part, not the clutch disc itself. (I thought that wasn't bad, but I have 201K on the clutch of my current winter beater.)

It is fun to hate repair costs...

Fortunately for you (sort of) most of those issues are maintenance related, with a few exceptions and shouldn't have to be repeated for a while.

Clutch was a little unexpected.

You've been sucker punched by a "warranty."

Yo. $1k for brakes? Did the replace all the lines?

$700 for a tire? Are you a TROLL?

What suspension work?

Have you heard? There are independent shops specializing in BMW's now!

Think I'll hold it right there.....

I think you need to learn to (1) do some of your own work, and (2) stop taking your car to a dealer. There's nothing unusual about the work you've had done, you've just paid way too much.

You're overpaying for services, mostly because you probably aren't well versed enough what needs to be done and how much it should cost. I still take my car to the dealership for service but have a very good relationship with the SA. For every service, if I feel it is too expensive I scrutinize and inquire why certain items cost what they cost. Usually they come back with a lower price that I feel is fair.

What is with all the tire issues?!?

Had you read a little further, you would have discovered: ...

Replacing pads, sensors and rotors at all four corners costs about $1000 in parts alone, for BMW OE parts shipped from a discount supplier. At $1044 for front & rear brakes, OP either got the deal of the decade, had only pads replaced (no rotors) or is rolling around on bargain-basement aftermarket parts.
