Two-door coupe exhaust louder than four-door?

So I dropped my car to the dealer to get diagnosed the problem is in another thread that I created.

So the dealer gave me a loaner car, it's 2011 335i two-door coupe The exhaust note on this car is more growling and aggressive than my car it's not a lot louder but it's definitely a little bit louder why is this?

Is the only difference between the two exhausts that mine is an Xdrive and it has the secondary cats? So if I remove those secondary cats And replaced with straight pipe would my car sound the same?

I love how the coup sounds!

There are no "secondary cats" though you may be thinking of resonators.

When exactly was your car built (month and year)? From your sig picture I can see it is an LCI sedan but your "Mein auto" does not mention the model year.

A 2011 335i coupe has the N55 engine which has a somewhat more aggressive exhaust note than the N54 it replaced. xDrive or the lack thereof has nothing to do with it. Sedans were not equipped with that engine until September 2010 (SOP for MY2011).

Cat-back exhaust changes to an N54 might get you a similar sound but it will not be the same as an N55. There are significant differences in the engine (twin-scroll vs. bi-turbocharging, Valvetronic) that change the character of the noise going into the pipes. You can easily get more aggressive or louder but subtle differences from that coupe you've borrowed will be discernible.

Edit: Found one of your earlier threads stating you have a 2011 model. That should be the same engine as the coupe (N55) but your build date on the door tag will tell the tale.

I have a 2011 n55. I checked my exhaust.

Bolts to downpipe and then there are 2 secondary cats, then X merge pipe then mufflers.

Here is a pic of my exhaust. I think the coupe has no secondary cats.

Two-door coupe exhaust louder than four-door?

Edit: also I can play music on my iPhone 5 through the cars center console USB and on my car it's "unrecognized" yet the loaner car is a 2011 also. So I am wondering why. The stereos are the exact dame except the loaner has Harmon kardon tweeters and I don't . Dealer said it may be a program update. Any thoughts?

Just got under the car and exhaust looks the exact same as my car EXCEPT. It doesn't have 2 secondary cats.

The N55 E92 coupes do not have the 2ndary cats which will definitely affect the exhaust sound levels on the car!

It's not alot louder just throatier and more growl.

I will Put it like this if I deleted the mufflers my wife would notice and want to know why?? LOL!

If I delete the secondary cats on my car and it sounds like the coupe my wife would never notice. The sound is not much louder it is just more throaty and growling more, it's level is a tad louder but not a whole lot.

The coupe sounds amazing I would never think about changing the coupes exhaust, it's just awesome!!

You can actually fit the E92 exhaust on the E90 so that is definitely an option. The E92 is a little longer vs the E90 so the tips will stick out about an inch and a half out further but it's doable

The exhaust on the E90 is all one piece from downpipe to muffler. I Was planning on having a shop cut the secondary cats off and replace them with straight pipe However I was going to have them put flanges on there just in case I didn't like it so I could put the secondary cats back on. However if it sounds like the Coupe I'm not gonna be putting any flanges on as I love the sound!

I believe the resonators are tuned differently on the E92, so even with a secondary cat mod it would probably not sound the same. You can also try unplugging the actuator for the flap that closes off the left pipe under low throttle load, this makes the exhaust burlier but there is a bit more drone when cruising on the freeway. Mine's been unplugged since day 1.

Mine is plugged and it sounds ok. I think the exhausts look identical. Well other than the secondary cats.

No resonators on the cars, it's x chamber type pipe.

They are not CATS

If they don't have a sensor they are not CATS they resinators.
I took the mufflers off and left the resinators. Also it only cost me $70. Go to you tube and look up 2008 bmw muffler deleted and look at the montego blue.
