Possible New 3 Series Owner

My GTI has 104K miles on it. My wife's Pilot has over 100K as well. We decided to keep the car that is cheaper to fix (Honda) and get me a newer car. Whatever I get will be handed down to my oldest daughter in 5 years.

I wanted a hatchback because my dogs weigh almost 200lbs each (Mastiffs). I also want AWD and a manual transmission. There are no Audi A3s with AWD/MT available and the Golf R is completely unavailable.

There is one 328Xi within 100 miles of me that has an MT. It is a 2011 with NAV, but no moon roof. I drove it today. I loved the feel of the inline 6. I loved the gearbox. The clutch is ok. It is quiet and refined, unlike the GTI. I think I could get used to it. It is about as quick as the GTI, but feels more responsive. Once I get used to it, I will probably appreciate the handling more than on the GTI.

It has 32k miles on it and the price is right. With the trade in and after taxes, it will cost me about 21k.

It is Space Grey Metallic with Chestnut Brown Leather. The NAV is cool, but I'd prefer a moonroof (oh well). The dealer agreed to resurface and paint two banged up rims, a banged up bumper and install Sirius; I'm a Howard Stern and Jason Ellis guy. Lack of Sirius is a deal breaker.

I spoke to 3 friends with X3's (same motor, drivetrain, etc.) and none have had any problems with their cars. They all have over 100K on them.

I fill the GTI with 93 octane and do synthetic oil changes every 4,000 miles or so.

I'm a car guy. I don't care about image, badging or prestige. The BMW 3 series is a classic "car guy's car". I only care about the driving experience and the quality that BMW brings to the table. The GTI has served me well. I love that car, but AWD is important to me and it is time to move on.

Any hints, recommendations, etc. would be appreciated. I'm about to pull the trigger.

One more thing for you guys to chew on and I'd appreciate any input. My past cars are as follows:

1983 GTI 5 speed MT (the greatest car I've ever owned)
1991 Acura Legend 2DR 5 speed MT ( A lot of power for the time and refined)
2000 Acura Integra GSR 5 speed MT (fun, fast, raw and loud)
2003 Audi A4 5 speed MT(total pig with serious body roll, but amazing at 70+mph... I hated it)
2007 GTI 6 speed MT (A serious and fun GT/Sedan...If it were AWD, I'd get another)

Let me know what you think about the 2011 328xi as it compares to these other cars.

Thanks, in advance.

I didn't know that BMW sold the E91 (5-door/wagon) in the US without the panorama roof. They may have -- but I don't remember seeing one. The E90 is the 4-door sedan. I'm afraid I'm confused. Do you want to buy a sedan or a wagon?

The rear seat on my E91 is not huge. It might be a little tight for a couple of 200 pound mastiffs.

FWIW electrical poltergeist in my car returned with a vengeance. It's going back to the dealer for service again later this week.

Hi

Hi,
I just bought similar car this past Sat. No trade in, paid 24,300 (before tax+ fees) for 2011 BMW 328i xdrive, 35K miles white alpine + navigations. I think your price is so much better. I don't know your trade in value so I cannot estimate.
it's certified pre-owned up to 7/28/2016 (100k miles). I kinda think my car is almost like 2010 car, rather than 2011 because of the in-service date was in 2010. It's kinda unfortunate on my side.
The maintenance program would be additional 2095.
Somehow, I think I paid a lot more than yours. Hope this helps for you to make a decision.

If you're willing to buy new, you might look at the new 3 Series GT -- basically a cross between a wagon and an SUV. I'm not sure your big dogs would fit in a 3 Series sedan.

Thanks, everybody.

I only haul one dog at a time. I'm going to buy the hammock type seatcover for the back. I only drive my girl 2 miles round trip about 3x per week. She'll fit just fine. My male gets walked only in the neighborhood, so he is not an issue.

Tusi, I'm not sure what I finally paid. I'll let you know. They came down a bit, but you and I are at around the same price. I think we both did really well.

Majickthese42, I went with the BMW sedan, because I could not find an AWD hatch wit MT (A3 or Golf R). Those cars, with the rear seats folded, have a tremendous amount of space.

I'm picking it up tomorrow. I'll let everyone know what I think. The road home is about 15 miles of hilly twisties.

Pics or it did not happen!

There are quite a few very avid dog lovers on these boards, and if you haven't bought the equipment yet, you might ask around and/or run a couple of searches, you know just in case.

For the clutch, which you describe as "okay", and assuming 104K miles were done by you on a stick shift, you might want to run a few searches on the "CDV delete". If you are a handy mechanic, it can technically be done for free.

Got it!

Love it!

Miss the GTI's seats and steering wheel, but this car has: better steering, better brakes, a much better gearbox, sharper handling (it really bites into curves) and it integrates better with music devices.

Acceleration is about the same. Neither car is super fast, but neither is slow. Both cars can be pushed and make great daily drivers.

The car is just plain fun!

Hman1 and tusi, I think you both got great deals! I'm in the market for 328 x drive w/most options, 30kmi. Around $30k seems to be going price! Should I be negotiating a little harder? Don't know if it makes a difference or not but I plan on paying cash also.

hman1 you and me are keeping manuals alive

hman1 you and me are keeping manuals alive
I put Redline D6 in my manual 325xi and it makes for much smoother
shifting . Much closer to the Integra Manual I have one of those still.

Well I love me a 3 series, dogs and manual gearboxes but I'm still confused on how an 83 GTI can be such a good car.

Firstbmrbill, go way below $30k and use cash and immediate delivery as leverage.

Miller335, the 83 GTI was a very special car. It was super light, had Recaro seats and handled like a dream. It had wonderful instrumentation, a killer golf ball shifter, and, most important, It was MY first car. It also made Road and Track's list of "The 25 Greatest Cars Ever Made".

Of course, the 3 series was a better car in 83, but at more then twice the price.

Anyway, I spent a good part of yesterday driving my new BMW and I'm falling in love. I'm stuck in MD on business, while my car is 250 miles away. I can't wait to get back in the car.

He's cute. At least he fits in the front seat. My dogs do not fit in the front. That is the Mastiff dilemma!

hman1 - you have some good negotiating power with that Bimmer - not too many people looking for a BMW wagon ------then a 6 sp m/t - Definitely sounds like a driver's car - have fun with it and post up some pick's. Good luck!

I was looking for a wagon, but there were none. I ended up with a 2011 328Xi with a manual transmission. I paid about 24k for the car with 32K miles on it. It has NAV/premium stereo and real leather, but no moon roof.

I love the car!

I am going to purchase a dog hammock from Dr. Fosters.
