4x4 and brake light

So this morning on my 2006 325xi I randomly had my brake light and 4x4 light come on. I know there is forums on this issue but I found so many different combinations of problems in these discussions it leaves me still lost as to what the issue is. 2 years ago I had after market xenon bulbs put in and one burnt out last week (probably doesn't make a difference) but thought I should mention that because everything else is stock. Got brakes done about a month also I'm sure that has nothing to do with this as well. Can anybody help diagnose this or is this just a diagnoses a I have to get done at the dealership?

The first thing I would try is to pull a CC ID code to read right on your dash. This site should tell you how, and then see what the # relates to on the list.

http://www.endtuning.com/ccidcodes.html

If your car is anything like my E92, changing out the entire socket panel for the brake light takes, literally, seconds. Plug to pull, lever to press, that is all. Really. You can try to save money, and see if there is a specific bulb that you can replace, but my entire panel was $15 at the time, including all the bulbs. (My specific model/yr was known to have a high resistance reading, so it needed to be done anyway.)

The 4x4 I have zero experience, but see if there is CC ID code. Also, you don't have to go to a dealership, I myself would in a heartbeat go to an indy first before the dealership. Anyway, when you pull these codes in a couple of minutes, google them up, and see what people have done about them.

On my car, the outer lights are the normal brake lights, but the inner ones are for "intensive braking" or "brake force display", they are also very easy to replace, though not nearly as easy as pushing one lever.

Have you visually inspected if all lights are working?

Awesome thank you so much! You mean the exterior lights? I've looked at those and just my driver side headlight is out I'm just waiting for my bulb to arrive still.

Yes- um well that's how I read your post, when you said "your brake light came on", I was thinking you got some warning about an issue with brake light. Maybe you meant something else? If you were warned about a brake light issue, yes I was wondering if you have visually inspected that your brake lights work.

Oh I see what you mean. Sorry I had a brain fart. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't even think to check and see if any of my brake lights were out.

No problem. You see, the "high resistance" reading I got (due to old design) just sets off a sort of false alarm (in my mind) because all of my lights have always worked.

Now, something weird happened, and I need to say that I replaced both sides (even though only one specific side had a CCID) - I was futzing around, pulling out the NEW panel on the side without any history of problem, plugged it back in, and got a new CCID code for this other, previously unproblematic side. So I decided to put back in the OLD "defective" panel, and no problem since. And this was quite a while ago.

What I did try previous to replacing the panel was using electrical contact cleaner. If yours pull out as easily as mine, then within a minute you can be inspecting all the bulbs, look for corrosion etc. You can try new bulbs to see if that works, if you can find them at a parts store, and that the socket panels have gone up a lot in price, etc. I'd be afraid of how much a dealership overcharges for this, give it a shot first yourself.

You're the man thanks for all this info. Yeah I'm trying to steer clear of the dealership at all costs. The first few reads I've found we're saying "bad transfer case" I hope that's not the case. That will be pricey...

When you said your "brake light came on", did you mean you got the bad bulb icon on the dash, or did the word "BRAKE" appear on the dash?

If both the words "4x4" and "BRAKE" appeared on your dash, it's likely not a bulb issue and could be any number of things (ABS sensor, ABS pump, things less complicated, etc.).

Ah. According to my owner's manual, there are no good situations where those 2 lights would be on at the same time.

Therefore, let me do my best Calwaterboy impersonation, recommend you get stored fault codes read by a BMW-specific code reader (an Indy with a full setup, or a Bavarian Technic tool), and let us know what the specific codes are. At a bare minimum, pull the CCID codes as directed by Ilovemycar in post #2 and let us know if anything comes up.

Have you ever had issues with stalling (even with auto trans), power loss, etc?

Those lights also come on when an xdrive model losses power. The SAS must be initialized after power is restored.

No but my tranny has felt kind funny, like jerky if that makes sense. And last night when I got to work I opened my door to get out and my dome lights didn't turn on like they always do. But when I turned them on manually they worked. It was like my car was trying to conserve power or something.

Oooo, DSX's "the ABS system is one of the largest parasitic drains on the electrical system" comment returns to mind. Do you know what kind of shape your battery is in?

Have the battery load tested...I bet this is your issue.

That would be awesome if it was something as easy as buying a new battery. I'll have it tested today.

Good job, guys. Roskman, I'm glad Zooks asked about the actual word BRAKE. I wasn't thinking clearly enough before, just to state it; the light icon looks like a light bulb, and I think* the only way you could know it was the brake light is if you looked up the CCID, which you didn't even know of yet, lol...

Learned something new about the ABS' greater parasitic draw.

@fdriller9, what are the implications of getting the load test before vs after attempting to charge a battery? The voltage reading will be different, but the CCA reading won't be different? Thanks.

You will get 3 lights typically together that will come on if you disconnect the batter, ABS, 4X4 and BRAKE, if your battery is going bad, you will typically get those if the voltage has dropped below a minimum. Turning the steering wheel all the way from lock to lock a couple times should clear the error.

If the error doesn't clear or comes back right away, still could be battery, but the other common issues are either a defective wheel speed sensor or the transfer case actuator motor fails (actually a little gear strips inside and car can't go in 4x4 and sets all 3 lights). Pretty easy to change - you can take it off and see the stripped gear to verify if that is the problem once you confirm it is not the battery, that part is like $350 though, not cheap.
