Question Sell or wait?

I am considering selling my 2008 328i sports/premium - graphite. 54,000 miles and only drive it about 1000 miles a year. Car is in perfect shape inside and out, and I love it but don't know if it will retain value.

The good news is: Steep depreciation is over

The bad news is: You've had steep depreciaton

'Sides which, they don't make 'em anymore - a classic.

Sell or wait?

You've driven that car a helluva lot more than 1k per year if it has 54k miles on it...

The way you get your money's worth is to put more than 100K miles on it before selling...it's even more cost effective to drive it as far as possible, say more than 200K miles.

Once you get it paid for, repairs are much cheaper than car payments.

I am assuming you meant 10,000 per year. If you love the car and it is in good shape no need to worry about it loosing value because it already has! At the rate you are putting on miles you could drive it another 5 to 10 years saving up for a new one. If you financed for 5 years and drive it for another 5 years making payments to yourself, you would get the next one free and clear, or at least it would feel that way!

If it were an air-cooled Porsche, or a Ferrari, maybe....

But it's not. It's still worth a few dollars. Even I put more miles than that on my beater Volvo, and I telecommute.

No, it will not retain value. As it ages it will continue to depreciate. Having been the owner of a low mileage BMW (1999 328i sold it after eleven years of ownership with 35K miles) the low mileage did not help much to in raising its value. The reality was, when I sold it, it was an eleven year old car. The fact it was in brand new condition with such low miles did not really help much when it came to price. The low mileage probably added a thousand or two onto the price of the vehicle. Later model, with higher mileage, BMW's were selling for more than what I could get for mine. In the end it was an older model BMW and mileage wasn't as much of a factor.

If you're really driving it only 1K miles per year it's probably a wise idea to sell it. It's not appreciating so selling it now is likely to get you the most you can from it. Plus you'll save on insurance, registration, finanancing fees (if applicable).
