I'm back after a brief stop in Z4 land

I just traded in my Z4 today for this 2011 335is, and I am so glad to come back home. I absolutely love the look of the E92 and have been looking for the right one ever since I got out of my 328xi. I was in the Z4 for only 15 months and it was fun while it lasted, but it was a pretty harsh and jittery ride and I was more than ready to come back to the 3 series. I wasn't really looking to get a new car, but I saw it on line and it was the exact thing I had always wanted even back when I got my 328xi in '08. I didn't necessarily need to get the "is", but I'll never turn down the extra horsepower. This is my first BMW with NAV, so I may have a question or two in the future, but for now I am just glad to hop in and drive it.

Congrats, looks bitchin.

E92's are amazing. If I need a four door I'd rather drive around one of my lessor cars then compromise on the E90.

That E92 would spin my head for a second look! Sharp. I'm thinking of going to a Z4 myself. Don't need four seats, don't like electric steering in the new cars, and looking for something sporty with a convertible top.

Really like that color combo! I did the exact same thing. I had my Z4 for 19 months and traded it in July this year for my E92. The Z4 is a lot of fun, but even with regular tires is more rough than the E92 with runflats! Also, the E85 3.0i just doesn't have enough grunt. It was a very fun car, but not exactly a daily driver.

You'll have to get a ZM to avoid electric steering. Non-M's have electric steering. And if you get a non-M, get post July 2006 as there are some problems with builds before July 2006. Google or search "sticky steering." But you probably already knew that. And besides you wouldn't be caught dead in a non-M.

While the Z4 is a beautiful car, and you will no doubt get many compliments, it is not really a great drivers car. It is a very rough ride and beyond just stiff when it encounters bumps or pot holes in the road. And if you happen to encounter one of those in a corner at anything above about 40 mph then you better hang on. For a weekend car it would probably be a good choice, but I used mine more than half of the time and got to be more than I could accept.

I was looking seriously at the new 4 series, and even had a pre-order in at my dealership for one, but ultimately just couldn't get past the look of it from the side. There is just something about that vent behind the front wheel that throws me off. Maybe as they become more prevalent I will become accustomed to it but for now I think I made the right choice by sticking to the E92.

Really? Awesome.

I took the ZHP out yesterday to go shoot some photography - perfect fall day so I dropped the top, lots of sun, temps around 70, the smell of the swirling leaves - it was one of those days convertibles are made for.

I'll be watching to see what you decide on - and pushing your buttons a bit

PS: I bought a DD, a 2000 Mercedes E320 - the ultimate highway machine.

rdkind62, sorry that you didn't enjoy your Z4. I have a 2006 Z4 M Roadster which I bought in July last year and I absolutely love the car! And my wife has a 2011 335is Coupe in the same color combo that you bought (and most of the same options), so I'm probably uniquely qualified to contrast and compare the two cars.

My Z4M does have a pretty harsh ride but it also has H&R Sport Springs which were installed by the original owner, so I can't say what the stock ride is like. The other major mods I've made are a Strömung exhaust and AFE Intake, both of which add considerably to the driving pleasure of the car as the awesome S54 engine absolutely growls in pure aural pleasure! I think that the 335is is the best sounding E9x model with the stock exhaust, but the Z4M with the Strömung exhaust absolutely blows it away!

No doubt though that the 335is is the more comfortable and refined ride. I absolutely love driving my wife's car and drove it every chance I could before I got my Z4M. She's out of town for 2.5 weeks right now and I drive her car if I have to go out in the evening since it's getting a little cool to go topless in the Z4M.

My car is a weekend car (I now have a company car) and hers is her daily driver and the 335is is much more practical for a daily driver.

DSXMachine: If you're considering a Z4 I hope that it's a Z4M! The car is a monster and so much fun to drive! Being a mechanic, you can certainly maintain a Z4M like it needs to be maintained.

Congrats! The 335is will probably turn out to be the last of the great 3 Series produced.
