E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Question USB Problem?

I got a new to me 2011 128i vert.

I plugged in my iPhone 5 with the standard, Apple issued, lightening to USB connector that came with the phone. The phone knows it was connected because it asked me to trust the computer. I said yes trust. Also the phone is charging.

When I click on audio it just says "insert" under the USB part of the menu. No iDrive, just standard.

What am I doing wrong?

USB Problem?

Dunno. My 09 E92 needs a Y cable to connect my 4S. Not sure exactly when it worked without one. I had an '11 E90 for a while, and IIRC it also needed a Y cable.

I think that one you need the y Cable and then a 30Pin lighening adapter

Go on ebay. and get the cable for about 25-35 bucks not the cheap one.

I just got a 2011 128i last week and am having the same issues. I've discovered that I have the base radio which is missing the component that will let you play strictly through the USB. I have to use the Y cable and the audio quality is just awful. I don't understand how a 2011 could have USB but not support the iPhone.

Braudham, Same here. I haven't tried (or ordered) Y-cable. I did, however use a free program called iTunesExport to create playlist folders and name them. I then installed all of my desired music on the internal hard drive. I am a bit dissapointed I don't have Sirius on this thing. The phone works fine as a bluetoothed phone and imports my contacts fine. It seems it is just missing the bluetooth audio support.

Anyone able to play their songs from iPhone using only the USB on the base audio system?

USB Problem?

I just went through this on my 2009. There was a 2012 (IIRC) update that allows iThings to play using the white Apple USB cord. It's the "NBT" iDrive system. We all have the CIC iDrive.

Prior to that, you need the BMW Y-cord and the Apple 30-pin to Lightning adapter. That's my setup and it works very well with excellent sound quality.

The NBT iDrive cars also allow Bluetooth audio streaming. Yes, be jealous.

Fortunately, the car drives so well otherwise that I don't mind the hurdle of figuring this crap out.

Thanks Brake_L8. This is exactly what I was wondering, if there was some sort of firmware update that was available. You mention iDrive. Is this update only for the iDrive units? My system is the stock radio, no iDrive, no navigation.

It's not a firmware update. I did some reading, and it looks like people can retrofit the NBT iDrive to a CIC iDrive car - at a cost of thousands of dollars.

If you are sans-iDrive, the same Y-cable logic applies. Not sure how you would retrofit but my guess is the cost would remain prohibitive.

I just ordered the "Y cable" from AMazon. I am hoping it provides the solution. When it arrives in 8-10 weeks from China, I will share my results.

Fingers crossed for ya! I got lucky and a friend had some extras so I got an official BMW cable. Otherwise, I was looking at the knockoffs.

There is a chip inside the cable that splits the audio and other signals for the car to read. I can't think it's very complex though, so the China cable ought to work just fine.

I use the y cable from china and it worked well. I eventually got the arm rest dock for a cleaner look. also on ebay.

For BMW gadgets and cables NEVER go to the dealer. unless you have extrea money to blow.

I received the Y cable last night. Tried it and it said something like it didn't recognize the device. So, again, I am without solution. Going to look into this Bluetooth adapter I read about on another post.

So that has to do with your production date of your car. Mine is a 09 with CIC

I had this happen with me and eBay. I got the wrong Y cable as well. Check out the correct y cable your dealer has and the part number to make sure you get the right eBay one
