35i driving observations

Having just picked up my 35i, I thought i'd share my observations on my recent long road trip to bring it home.

First, the engine and transmission combo is smooth. Drove the 4 banger and thought it was good but the 6 just feels stronger and more solid.

Since I had over a 1,000 miles on my trip I thought I would try a MPG test. First tank, from dealer, was premium and I kept the speed to under 65, through the highways in the northeast. Based on the MPG on the dash, average MPG for the tank, after about 350 miles was 29.5 mpg. Second refill was with midgrade 89 and a more average driving of about 80 MPH. That tankfull netted about 27.4 mpg. Final tank was premium 93 with same 80 MPH driving and that combo netted 28.3.

While by all means not "scientific" I think it shows me that the sweet spot for economy is driving a bit slower than I want, but using premium can help on fuel economy a little bit

M Sport suspension is just about perfect, even with the rougher roads of the Northeast. Sport seats were extremely comfortable, once you get them right. Good thing there is seat memory since we have three drivers. Hit alot of heavy rain and glad to see the pano roof didn't leak like my E61 5 series wagon did.

Only sad thing is that this will likely become my daughters car so I won't get to drive it as much as I want, except weekends...on the other hand that might be a good thing since driving it on weekends I can just focus on having fun.

Overall, very happy about the purchase.

Congrats on the new X1!

Yeah, the inline 6 combined with Xdrive can be just down right scary sometimes. If you punch it at just the right time the seat will slam into your back quite hard.

That's amazing mpg, best I've seen is 24mpg on highway only. 22-23mpg is what I get.

Re: 35i driving observations

I was a bit surprised as well.straight flat runs on the interstate. I am expecting lower when I get to local driving.

Our '13 35i just turned 15,000 miles and is a year old Nov 1st, just got the carbon fiber pen from BMW. The last 1200 mile highway trip was 26-27mpg at 70-75mph once we got out of the mountains. 50/50 highway city its sits at 25.4mpg most of the time which IMO is pretty good, hand calculated is a little less, like .5mpg, but I only hand calculated it a few times.

I dont drive it much, my wife really likes it though, pretty quick for what it is and havent had any issues at all except the low coolant light came on when it got cool out. Was low about a pint of antifreeze.

Wasnt really thrilled about the oil change light not coming on until 14,000 miles but other than that its been a great little car so far.
