2002 M3 convertible front latch problem

I need advise from someone who understands the front latching mechanism for the convertible top. When the top stopped working the BMW shop said the front locking latches were bad and they replaced them with new parts for $840, then they said that the latch motor was also bad. They said it was running, however it was slipping and not operating anything. I suspect it was the motor that was the original problem and the latches didn't work because the motor was faulty. How does the system work and how do I confirm that both parts were bad and not just the motor. Joe
