bmw 320i e90 engine fault,reduced power

hi guys.
The warning message just came up last weekend. i took the car to specialist today to get a scan, got the error code 285a, seems either the valvetronic sensor or the motor is broken.
i cannot book in till next week. just want to ask, is it to hard to fix by myself. and can i still drive my car for long distance travel?
thanks

You need to remove the valve cover to access the sensor. If you can do a valve cover gasket repair, the sensor replacement is a snap.
